Quick Overview: Bergamo Upper Town Small Group Walking Tour with Funicolar Ride

If you enjoy some time in Milan, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Bergamo, easy to reach by train. Bergamo is a beautiful medieval city composed by Upper and Lower Bergamo. The most interesting part of the city is Upper Bergamo that you reach by a cable train, the“Funicolare”, with your guide. At arrival, explore the city with its defensive walls and old buildings, and spend some time in“Piazza Vecchia”, the most important square of Bergamo. The tour continues at the “Campanone”, the bell tower, from which to see at the whole city. Then, you admire the church of Santa Maria Maggiore built in Baroque style, a real gem! The wonders of the city are not finished, you walk to the “Antico Lavatoio” and the “Cittadella Viscontea” house of Visconti,a Real family of Bergamo. It’s time for a sweet surprise, you can taste the “gelato” in the ice-cream shop that invented the Stracciatella, a flavour composed by milk ice-cream and chocolate chips. A delicious ending not to forget this day!

Beautiful church in the center of Bergamo which stands in the square of the same name. Certainly one of the most beautiful Renaissance-style churches in Bergamo. The church was founded in the 1300s. In the 1530 to 1535, the nave was rebuilt with five chapels on each side and Pietro Isabello participated in this 16th-century reconstruction. In 1720, the next refurbishment was led by Giovanni Battista Caniana. Inside, works by local artists and the tomb relics of the Tasso family, but the jewel in this church is the recently restored grand altar of the Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto. On the naked facade of the church is a modern bronze sculpture by the sculptor Samaini "Descent of the Holy Spirit". Worth seeing if you are in Begamo.

We didn't go into this church but passed by a couple of times while out wandering. The sculpture on the outside of the church is spectacular

Usially inside the church may be dark. On the right side of church, there is icon painted Lotto. Look at the fence in front of an icon. On the right there is a white switch. Click it and the lights will be turned on. The church will also become lighter.

A really super (modern) decoration on a medieval facade. Just a great piece of Italian art. Don't hesitate to include this stop in your downtown walks. (cosy area anyway)
