This is one of 2 adjoining "Civic Museums" in Como (the other being the Archaeological Museum), and many travel sites don't distinguish very well between them, which is confusing. This one, however, focuses on the Risorgimento and Contemporary History eras, and is worth taking a look at. Surprisingly, there's not a lot about Garibaldi himself, altho there is a Roman-style... Como is a beautiful city and so close to Milan, actually prefer staying here and making the train trip in and this is partly because of the lake and partly the history of the region. This museum with its artifacts and displays helps me understand why I love the region so much.

Good for an hour or two - with varied exhibits in a rabbit warren of rooms. Some lovely and unexpected frescos and ceilings and gives some insight into the history of Como and the surrounding area.

A lovely museum of Como's past and history spread over thousands of years. Lovely statuary, artifacts, and paintings and a great deal of esoterica. The museum is a bit confusing to navigate even with the included map.

This museum closes for lunch (which we did not expect) At 2:00PM we enjoyed wondering through Italy's history - the museum is well organized, so we could do walk at our own pace and review history.

We decided to visit this museum after reading some reviews here in TripAdvisor and we did not get wrong! Magnificent interiors are worth the visit alone. The rich exhibition content includes mostly the local culture development through the years (from prehistory, Etruscans and Romans to the Italian War of Independence) but there is also a number of other interesting things... This was a revelation to see the amount of history attaching to this ancient town and local area. Mostly signed in Italian of course, but there were short descriptions of the main features in English in each room. The building itself has some quite beautiful rooms.
