We were staying in Menaggio and we visited Villa Monastero on our first trip to Varenna. The gardens are absolutely fabulous with amazing views over The lake and with great photo ops. It is a fair bit of walking though and beware as it's quite up and down. Take comfy sturdy shoes and it's well worth it.

September 2016 we took the ferry from Como to Varenna. Walking into the town, we discovered this event site (conferences, wedding receptions, etc.) which is beautifully appointed with all sorts for colored vegetation. There is a café in the middle of the garden with outdoor seating and a great view. Don't miss this, when your ferry stops in Varenna on... More

The garden is a long thin affair stretching along the shore of Lake Como at Varenna. It is a very pleasant walk and well worth the entrance fee of a few Euros. Plenty of ideas for your own garden when you get home!

Not only is the view and landscaping beautiful but quite a fascinating place to see and hear the history of it. It is quite a hike to the top. I did see some people get out of a taxi but we were already walking so we didn't inquire.

These gardens are beautiful and set on the edge of Lake Como. There is a wide range of plants and trees, many of which look positively prehistoric. The citrus trees are varied and some will amaze you when you see how large the fruit grow in this wonderful setting. The walk is not all level and does have some steps... More

We decided to skip the museum and visit the gardens only - it's nice that there is such an option and the garden only ticket is discounted. Even on a cloudy day, the garden impresses, offering an idyllic place to relax and take in the views of the lake and the neighbouring villages. There are a few spots where you... More

Wonderful afternoon walk with beautiful plants and views of the lake. You'll find many treasures and places to sit and enjoy the garden. Also helpful were public bathrooms at the bottom of the walk.

Beautiful grounds of many flowers and shrubs not known to the USA. A nice walk around the grounds at a reasonable price.

The house is quite interesting but the main appeal is the garden. The gardens are a long narrow sequence of areas along the edge of the Lake and there are lovely views at every turn. Well worth a visit.

A very well tended gardens in a lovely and very romantic setting, overlooking Lake Como. We were fortunate to have a most wonderful warm and clear October day. There were fruits on the citrus trees (lemons, Pomelos and oranges,) blossoming flowers and shrubs. The different palm trees were very interesting, and the Magnolia trees were huge. The mosaic floors were... More
