Some places are so grand and expansive that they are tough to take in. The Palazzo Ducale is like that. After a while, beauty is swallowed by beauty, and art fades into more art. That said, you should go and spend some time looking at...More

Things didn't start well due to some incredibly rude staff in the ticket office. It was confusing because apparently the Mantagna frescoes were sold out, so it wasn't clear what we could see. Just the Ducale Palace it seems. The staff inside the palace were...More

The height of Renaissance luxury. Very impressive apartments, Greco-Roman statuary, and imposing frescoes throughout.

Under-realised in contemporary museum terms, here's an example of how Mother italy has managed to squander its riches & not capitalise on its past. That having been said, this is nonetheless an extraordinary place & it beggars the mind how the Gonzagas, the original inhabitants...More

This place was amazing and highly recommended to take some time appreciating the frescoes and decorations. Most of the rooms were not heated. I was freezing inside! Best to go during the day in warm weather.

This is a huge complex, a ducal palace and castle. It was home to the Gonzaga family, which ruled Mantua for three hundred years. There are buildings from the several centuries, with some of the palace decorated in the 18th century when the Gonzaga family...More

Slightly hard to work out how to get in – the ticket office is between the castle (where the Mantegna frescoes are) and the Palace which forms the rest of the visit. Once I’d worked that out, it was fine – the Mantegnas are a...More

The ticket price includes the garden, lovely to get away from the heat. The palace is vast and very informative even if you are not on a tour. Worth the visit if ceilings are your favourite.

We visited the Palazzo Ducale during our visit to Mantova and it was, frankly, dull. Lots of rooms, yes, lots of stuff, yes, (although many of the rooms were stark and empty), but not presented in a interesting or engaging way. We were quite bored...More
