The visit could easily take several hours if you want to really enjoy it and appreciate it... but the time spent is completely worth it. This palace is a gem of Medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. In terms of its grandiosity and richness could be compared to Versailles, yet it's located in a small (but beautiful) town of province.... More

We went on Sunday morning and we more or less had this gem all to ourselves. An absolute delight created by the Gonzaga family over the period of 5 centuries. Unfortunately a great deal of the art work was sold off to the King of England in the 1600s but it is still a treasure. Excellent explanations, very clearly set... More

This didn't do it for us. The art work and different rooms blended into one, nothing there which really sparked our interest. No doubt that others have different opinions and may well have enjoyed it.

The vast castle of the Gonzaga family is a 14-th century fortress and a proper palace, filled with art - and famous for the frescoes in the Caera degli Sposi (the room of the newly weds). The caste can be visited with a guide - which is very much worth it! We had a wonderful, passionate and funny guide -... More

Each room was differently decorated with unique ceilings and wall frescoes. A vast site and very interesting. The power on show in the elaborately decorated rooms is a part of the whole history of the place.

The "other" palace in Mantova, the Te holding the only artist Shakespeare mentions by name, Giulio Romano; still, this one is more habitable, with nice ceilings…see illustration. The guides are a bit compulsive on having to go only one way--even through specific rooms. Odd. May derive from rigid Italian schooling? See illustration of Diana (the Moon) drawn across the heavens... More

The palace complex is enormous and includes the Camera dedli Sposi and the Castello San Giorgio. This is the one building you have to see in Mantua.

We usually invest in audio guides to add information to any visit but the audio guide in the Ducal palace isn't inspiring, focused on the history of the artist of the painting it was describing, rather than the painting itself and was often unclear on which painting it was describing in a room. I am unsure whether the audio guide... More
