About
The centerpiece of Milan, the Duomo is one of Europe’s greatest architectural and cultural landmarks. As Italy’s largest church and one of the largest in the world, it took over 600 years to build. Today, the Duomo has a capacity of 40,000 people and is home to the world’s second-largest organ. Admire the wide selection of religious art on display inside, or marvel at the 3000 statues that line its Gothic exterior. Be sure to join one of the available Duomo tours, which include art tours and even rooftop tours, where you might be able to see as far as the Italian Alps. – Tripadvisor

Top ways to experience Duomo di Milano
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

- sligoinianSligo, Ireland192 contributionsA must visitThis a must visit place when in Milan we bought tickets online in advance to avoid the queues which included the museum .The architecture is just absolutely amazing. We took the lift to rooftop which takes you 3/4 of the way up there is still some stairs to climb .so you need to be fairly active to climb them and again the return journey down with no lift. The views from the roof top are breath taking and the workmanship that it took to achieve all this inside and outside its just wonderful. The museum is ok but nothing to amazingVisited March 2023Written 20 March 2023
- Jo C111 contributionsDelayed city break (originally planned for 2020)We had a private tour and our guide didn’t stop for over two hours. Such amazing knowledge. Really friendly. Well worth the cost and the time. Also gained access to the museum that’s valid fir three days. Views from the top breathtakingVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2023
- Sanjay SMumbai, India312 contributionsAmazing Marvel..perhaps soul of MilanThis is a masterpiece of architecture and divine as well as it dates back 800+yrs back. The big carved statues on high pillars amazes the technology ancestors would have 800 years back when probably no cranes or tools were known to human kind. The ambience around the Duomo is amazing and takes you to different world.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2023
- DesertDweller32690 contributionsMUST-SEE: Terraces! We enjoyed a beautiful afternoon at the Duomo. DEFINITELY go to the terraces. WELL worth-it!! We did the church and terraces (steps) ticket. The steps were not as long a climb as perhaps they could be. Once on the top, there are many different levels that allow for different viewpoints of the city, as well as the magnificent structure. Great picture spots all around. A big SKIP would be the archaeological museum. There was a significant line to get in, and one you are down below, there just isn't that much.Visited March 2023Written 26 March 2023
- mike aManagua, Nicaragua46 contributionsGothic treasureAmazing Gothic church with stained glass, thousands of sculptures and an architetural wonder. Must see in Milan. Buy tickets online to skip the fairly long que. 7 euro. Can alos go to the top for spectacular views. - Yi LLancaster, United Kingdom21 contributionsWorthy experienceBeautiful building, easily accessible by subway. After buying tickets online, you can go in. The more distinctive feature is that you can climb the stairs to the top of the building. The scenery is excellent, but it is a bit tiringVisited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 March 2023
- LostInTimePittsburgh, Pennsylvania11,753 contributionsGreat church. This church is huge. The biggest one in Italy. The interior has so much space. It was built over a long period of time and you can see things from every period. There are so many statues. It’s really a great church. I hope it lasts a few more centuries.Visited March 2023Travelled on businessWritten 29 March 2023
- LondonDiT175 contributionsUnmissableOf course you want to go! Tips. I booked for late (after 5.30) and this worked well with short queues for security. We did not buy a guide - mistake as there are very few explanatory signs in the Duomo. The rooftop is a separate entrance and you cannot get back into the Duomo afterwards and you also need to queue and go through security twice. Allow for this in timing. The roof top is strenuous even if you take the lift. Be prepared with right footwear - there is no getting out of some steep slopes, stairs and the walk all the way down!Visited March 2023Written 1 April 2023
- LaSirenaTravelerWheaton, Illinois16 contributionsLearn the Insights of the DuomoHighly recommend a tour! Our guide Maria told us so many things about the Duomo that we never would have known if we just went in ourselves. We absolutely loved it! Plus you skip the line for the elevator trip to the rooftop. Would definitely recommend this.Visited March 2023Written 3 April 2023
- perrypickerign108 contributionsThe 8th Wonder of the World! The Duomo Cathedral in Milan is perhaps the most amazing and breath-taking man-made structure i have ever seen. Words and pictures are in adequate to describe the magnitude and splendor of this creation. It is all marble with 3400 sculptures and the three largest stain glass windows in the world. The first two display the Old Testament and the third the New Testament. There numerous additional stain glass windows and carvings as well. For mass it hold 40,000 and it took almost 600 years to construct...I saw it several times over several days and I never lost the awe and wonder. It is a must see.Visited March 2023Written 4 April 2023

This was absolutely beautiful! The queues were well managed and walking on the roof was really cool. My only issue was there was clear guidance about not having legs on show and so we both wore long trousers even though it was hot but they were letting lots of people in wearing shorts. Either make it a rule or don’t.

The Milan Cathedral was amazing to visit with a tour guide; however, I didn’t feel she had enough information about the history of the Duomo. I paid 109 Euros and was expecting to learn more about its history.

This Milan Cathedral is the largest church in the Republic of Italy. Known as the Duomo di Milano, construction began in 1386; it was completed in the md-20th Century. It's well known in Lombardy and internationally for its intricate features The Duomo is an active Catholic place of worship. By the way, a fee is payable for entry.

Day and night Amazing Duomo.
To the Duomo for a tour of the Cathedral, its subterranean archeological remains of the city; and a rooftop walk. The interior of the Duomo was fantastic. Amazing to see the ornate spires so close up. And the expansive views of the city.

Website says ticket is good for 3 days from date chosen. What does that mean? Can I use the ticket multiple times the same day? And on different days?
Fx visit the rooftop the first day, go to a restaurant for lunch, come back and visit the Duomo later the same day, and come back the next day to see the museum and the adjacent church/clocktower?
Jim A
Haarlev, Denmark3 contributions
They answered this, and other questions asked here:
Duomo Terraces Museum (Lift or stairs), Culture Pass, Culture Pass Plus, Duomo+Museum and Duomo +Ambrosiana tickets are valid 3 days from the date picked, with one entrance per each site within the opening hours. For Duomo Terraces Museum (Lift or stairs) and Duomo+Ambrosiana tickets the selected time slot refers to the entrance to the Duomo Terraces, from which it is then possible to descend directly inside the Cathedral via stairs.
The entrance time selected for the visit is purely indicative and not restrictive.

We are planning to visit the Duomo here at the start of November. We are trying to decide whether buying the fast pass tickets will be worth the extra cost at this time of year. Are the ques still as long at this time? Thank you.

My tour started at 4:30pm on a weekday and I only noticed a couple of people in line for tickets at that time. This was beginning of October 2023.
Is it possible to borrow or purchase a shawl at the Duomo in case shoulders etc are visible?

Hello, I'm sorry I can't help you with this. I didn't enter the Cathedral so would not know. Why not try to buy a shawl in Brera shopping area just adjacent to Douma square - they have awesome shopping and resonable prices. Don't buy from a street vendor.

Hi, I'm visiting midweek in September (probably around 1pm). I'll only be visiting the rooftop.
I'm happy to buy a ticket to climb the stairs - might I encounter queues or are the queues only on the lift? If my priority is to reduce queuing time, would I be better off with an express lift ticket?
Thanks for your help

There was no queue for the stairs when we went in July.

Hi , I will be visiting with 3 kids and husband on the first week of august on a friday, what will be the ideal less crowded time to visit the duomo and terraces?
are the lines to the lift too long and therefore maybe better to climb by stairs?
Will I be asked to leave my baby stroller and if so where?

Hi everyone. I’m looking at purchasing advance tickets for the Duomo rooftop. I noticed the website says ticket is good for 3 days from date chosen for visit but then it also makes you pick a time slot. Can you not just show up at any time during the day that you choose and use your ticket then? Thank you in advance for your help.

It may depend on the day, but I would stick to the time your ticket identifies. I chose evening near sunset and that was incredible! A soloist was singing “Hallelujah” when I got to the top. Something I will never forget. As this cathedral has millions of visitors per year, they want to do what they can to preserve it while making it accessible to everyone who wants to see it.
I'm planning on attending a guided tour w/ rooftop access after checking out of my accommodation so will have my backpack with me. It's a regular sized backpack but will have my toiletries, chargers, clothes, etc. with me... do you foresee this being a problem & if so, is there locker storage available onsite or nearby?
Thanks,
Ryan
