The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

    La Bohéme
Very beautiful stage design and surroundings. The staff were helpful and resourceful. La Bohéme is always beautiful, this was my third time I've seen it on stage. But I couldn't hear the singers enough. The best vocal performance was the Bass who played Colline the philosopher. Good old Classic

    Phenomenal!!!
Have seen opera in a number of countries and the current staging of Puccini’s La Boheme was incredible. Theater is smaller than you would think so is intimate. Acoustics are excellent and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Getting tickets take some planning, but well worth it if you are a fan of opera and want to see it at its absolute finest.

Wonderful tour of this historic theater
We took the official tour of La Scala and it was well worth the cost. We were able to visit the museum - not of great interest to us since we didn't know many of the performers featured there but still interesting. Our guide took us to the royal box (we all got to sit in it), several other smaller boxes, and the stage area where we learned how the mechanics of the stage work. They were setting up for a performance that evening so we could not go into the orchestra pit but were able to see it and also sit in some of the seats in the main part of the theater. Our guide gave us so much information during the tour about the history of the theater and previous owners of the boxes, how they move sets around, recommendations on how to pick the best seat locations if attending a performance. We definitely learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit this beautiful, historic theater.

    Beautiful Theater
After reading about its significance, we decided to drop by to take a look at the theater and its museum even though we did not have time to attend a performance. Before visiting, check their website on whether the theater can be accessed. If there are no events or rehearsals going on, you can walk into several of the boxes giving you a view of the theater. Otherwise, only the museum can be viewed. The museum was alright with artifacts and exhibits. The place did get a bit crowded with what appeared to be numerous school groups.

Good Tour of Theatre and Museum
Our tour group went on a tour of the theatre and the museum. On the tour in the theatre, we visited the Toscanini Foyer then we went into one of the third level box for a view of the interior of the theatre. From the theatre, we visited the museum which provided a good history of the theatre and its performers.

    Spectacular La Scala
During our visit to Milan, as an opera-lover, it was important for me to attend a performance at Teatro La Scala, even as a piece as obscure as 'Andre Chenier' (though we were lucky to have famed tenor Jonas Kaufmann sing the title role). The auditorium is a jewel box of a theatre with a spectacular laced ceiling and gorgeous chandelier. It was also a treat to see the ushers in uniform all in black with a gold chain. The acoustics are fantastic in the auditorium. However, if you are NOT an opera fan, you may not wish to attend a performance. Our seats were the rear seats on the Box level. The front seats of the box are actual chairs and have screens with translations. The rear seats are backless stools, which could be hard seating for a long performance. The views from the back of the box are cut off, so your chances of seeing the complete stage are low. The box can also trap heat with the velvet upholstery with any air conditioning at a minimum. I had wanted to be more dressed up than I was, but the heat in Milan made that difficult. If you want a program, make sure you obtain/purchase before the performance as they can be sold out by intermission. Also the bar line can be quite long at intermission. Getting to attend La Scala was a highlight for me, and I thanked my partner and my sister who attended with me, for their patience in sitting through the performance.

    Amazing opera experience
Visited for opera Rusulka , this opera house was beautiful. Very basic from the outside but stunning from the inside. I sat in a box on the second floor near the back and had an amazing view / acoustics. I definitely recommend buying the front seats as the back seats are stools . For a 4 hour opera, that could be a long time.

    Macbeth-Verdi
We went to hear Verdi's Macbeth. An outstanding production. The orchestra was excellent & the singing & staging was wonderful also. If you want to hear opera as it was meant to be this is THE place. Expensive for good seats but worth it. Splurge on yourself, it will be a treat if you are an opera lover.

One of the greatest music venues in the world!!
This is one of the quintessential opera houses of Europe, a place where the world’s best singers have dreamt of singing since 1778! The museum houses all sorts of memorabilia related to the rich history of this beautiful venue. But the best moment of the tour, at least for us, is stepping into one of the boxes overlooking this majestic interior and imagining watching the debut of legends like Paganini or Verdi or Mozart with a packed house of thousands. The only thing better than the tour is actually attending a concert live!

Spent 300 Euros each for a seat in a box to see The Marriage of Figaro tonight. 600 euros to not be able to see the stage!. Sat on stools in a box and could only see a small fraction of the right hand part stage if I craned my neck. The people behind could not see a thing. It is a disgrace that these seats are sold at all. We regularly visit theatres and. for example in the RSC in Stratford it is clearly stated when the view is restricted and the price is reduced. Furthermore the orchestra was louder than some of the singers and we could hardly hear them. The performance was also lack lustre and tedious. Some of the singers were just awful- sorry. We have visited the ROH many times, The Vienna Opera House, Prague Theatres, and we expected La Scala to be world class - but no. The ROH Covent Garden is a million times better in all ways and would never stage such a weak performance.. Never again to La Scala.

If you love opera and you have not been to La Scala, plan way in advance to go. We bought our tickets in May when the box office opened for The Barber of Seville, and we got very good tickets. Three-quarters of the seats were already sold probably to season ticket holders. The view and the acoustics were amazing. We dressed appropriately for this venue, as expected at an opera house of this standing. Some people, however, dressed like pigs and were actually let in. If you purchase tickets on the left or right side of the theater in the boxes, do everything you can to get the front two seats in the box.

I obtained best seats in the house tickets to see Swan Lake at La Scala in September and I thought it would be helpful if I explained step by step how I did it. There are a lot of posts in this forum and various other places that mention the difficulty. Additionally La Scala is apparently huge (over 3000 seats) many of which in the cheapest sections have partial or restricted views where you can hear but not see much. For a once in a lifetime trip I decided to splurge on the best seats if I could get them. I booked our trip to Milan months ago and was lucky to find Swan Lake on during our 2 night visit. Booking had not yet opened and that was key. Getting tickets after booking has opened - forgeddaboudit unless you go through a 3rd party. I cannot give advice on that, other than I wouldn’t do it. Very expensive and they add extras and they try and sell tickets in advance that are not available and they don’t have as yet.
1. I used chrome on my desktop. I can’t imagine trying it on a phone and seeing the tiny seat maps, but I'm sure it’s doable. A tablet likely works too. I installed the Google translate extension which automatically translates pages. It is a godsend although some sites have an English button at the top right. I did a ton of research. There are many sites that show the seating plans and the views. Do your own in advance. Interestingly when you actually book you can see a small view from the seat you choose. You can do all that in advance so you get an idea of where you want to sit. The La Scala website is teatroallascala.org/en and if you click on "Season" you will see all the events; the genre and their dates.

2. Next, stay on "Season"; find the tab on the right that says "Box Office" and click "tickets". You will then see a number of different options. Click on "tickets and maps" for the season you want. It then shows a seating map of La Scala with colors representing the prices and all the prices listed below. As far as I was concerned, I was only interested in buying yellow seats. For a once in a lifetime trip I wasn’t going to stint. The different genre's show the same map but different colors. For example, Ballet and Opera have fewer yellow seats than Concerts since the view for music is not that important. The ticket prices for ballet were not outrageous compared to the USA on Broadway for example. Swan Lake Ballet most expensive seat was $125€ and I thought was a bargain. Note though that it cost 25€ extra for "20% presale surcharge bought online" so I actually paid 150€. Opera tickets are much more expensive than ballet and concerts. Opera is 250€-300 €.

3. The website actually gives good information and allows you to plan. I studied the seating map for a good while and did some research on articles posted by people and decided that I would sit in a box in the center in what is called "Palchi". Front box in Palchi (Palchi 1) is the best. Also the only seats worth buying were the front row of the 3 in any box. The alternative was downstairs ("platea") somewhere in the center or a few seats either side of the center aisle. I didn't know what I was going to find available when the booking opened so I prepared options I would accept. "Palco 2, 3 and 4" might have been ok also provided you get the front seats. A website that shows you views from every seat can be found at
sitzplatzvorschau.de/teatro_alla_scala_milano/index.html#id=0021

4. Go back to the tickets page and click "how to buy". On the first line click "webshop" It shows you bookable performance, whether tickets are available and price. This is only available for shows where booking has started. By that time booking has opened it is too late. My experience was that you have to buy the day and almost the hour it opens to get good seats. After about 3 hours there are not many good seats available and they were on the sides.

5. So how to actually book? Go back to the Season you are interested in, click and get the list of performances and click on the show you are interested in. It gives details and just below the picture is a red box that says when it goes on sale. So for example, I just looked at William Tell. The performance is 20 March to 10 April 2024 and booking opens January 10 at 10am. So your target is January 10. In my case on the west coast it was 1am in the morning!! Yep, you have to get up in the middle of the night either east or west coast in the USA or the afternoon in Australasia.
The actual booking website is teatroallascala.vivaticket.it and the secret sauce is to preregister and get a login id and password and enter all your details. This allows you to save time at the actual booking and also do a dry run. If you click on “tickets” you will see all the shows available for sale. Since booking for your show has not opened, it will not be there. When you want to book, a few minutes before 10am on the day, login and start refreshing the screen a few minutes before 10am Italian time. Suddenly your show will pop up and you can pick the performance and click “buy”. This will take to you to the show details and pick “manual seat selection”. It will show you the map with colors and black means these are gone. So you can pick the little colored box you want and it will go into the cart below. Then check out. Be prepared to have to authorize your card due to it being foreign but it worked fine. Purchase will be confirmed and tickets emailed. Write down confirmations etc. as a precaution. Voila!
Beware: Non Refundable.
Bonus tips:
If you don’t see what you want, go back and pick another day but it is time consuming and tickets go fast. So decide what is acceptable in advance and don’t delay! Pick any available performance in advance and do a dry run all the way through to the final purchase step. It is invaluable to iron out kinks and see the views they show. I did this a couple of times.
Good luck and may the ticket gods be with you!

The theater was founded in 1778. It got its name from the church Chiesa di Santa Maria alla Scala, which was located on this site before the theater was built.

Originally just planned to take the tour, as the tickets apparently sell out pretty much as soon as they go on sale. But amazingly we were able to get last minute (and decent) tickets to see Macbeth on ticketswap. The place was so beautiful and the singing was wonderful! The only issue was that it did get a little warm inside by the end.
