    Worth the journey
Amazing experience following the life of St Francis of Assisi through the chapels on the Sacra Monte do Orta. Terrific guided tour which gave the background to the buildings and statues and frescoes. As well as the history of the whole design from the late 16th century through the 17th. Worth a long visit. For the guided tour go to the information s kiosk.

    A gem.
This was a wonderful experience. Victor, who was attending the information desk made it so. His knowledge of the churches, the historical context and the art and theatre of site, combined with an obvious passion for it and for sharing it, gave us an appreciation for this that we would otherwise have missed. For anyone with an interest in European history, history of the reformation and counter reformation or the place and development of artistic expression in Italian culture, this site is a gem. Thank you, Victor.

Our Guide at Sacro Monti di Orta
While spending a wonderful week of our Italian vacation at San Giulio, my wife and I visited Sacro Monte di Orta. We had the good fortune of meeting Vittorio Valenta who was our guide. The beautiful theater of the Sacro Monti was brought to life by Vittorio who with his love of the chapels and extensive knowledge made the amazing visual experience not only come to life but also highly educational. If you visit, ask for Vittorio and enjoy his knowledge and infectious enthusiasm for this Sacro Monti. Chuck & Sharon - Pinetop Arizona USA

    Beautiful place, kind people
The location is perfect, the view is spectacular. When you come out of the church of San Nicolao the whole Lake spreads out in front of you. There is an opportunity to join a mass as well in the above mentioned beautiful church. You can also take part in a guided tour where you can learn fascinating stories about the chapels depicting the life of Saint Francis. Both the Franciscan monks and the tour guide are very friendly and welcoming. Ideal place to recharge your batteries.

    Religion and landscape follies combine!
Amazing place to explore. Did not know what to expect as we walked up the steep hill from the town. You do not have to be religious to enjoy this place. Think of it as a landscape park full of classical follies - I did. Great views across the lake as well. Highly recommended.

We were completely surprised by our visit to Sacro Monte di Orta. The visit was always on the itinerary but I confess to my error in research… I was expecting one chapel at the top of the hill with postcard worthy views of Lake Orta… what a pleasant surprise to find that it is sooo much more!

We visited as a family of 4 (with 2 girls age 10 & 12). We wanted to see it but the girls we not bothered. We asked at the information booth for a an overview of the place and the man was awesome (using our basic broken Italian). He took several minutes to explain to us (in the most perfect English!) and completely brought the experience to life, telling us the background as an exciting story!!! We felt like we had our own personal guide, even though he didn’t accompany us on the tour – Our girls were fully engaged thanks to him. We fully understood the story behind the chapels and this meant we got so much more out of the visit. Thank you.

A really impressive set of chapels full of an unusual combination of frescoes and statues. We found guide books very lacking practical info in English, so here is some that I hope will be useful to someone! You need to drive as if going to Orta san Giulio. There are signs to parking up a hill that is signposted to the sacro monte, but you can’t actually park there unless you have some sort of pass, no idea where you’d get that as a tourist. So park in the main Orta car park - the overflow one on the left is easiest as it has automatic number plate recognition, and you just pay at the new looking machine when you’re ready to leave by typing in the reg no. Walk down the hill past the crazy golf and there is a a sign off to the left to walk up a hill to sacro monte, and it’s quite well signposted from there. There’s also a really nice cafe where the chapels are, highly recommend the trout focaccia , which bears no resemblance at all to the focaccia you get in English supermarkets . Enjoy!
