Having walked uphill through cobbled streets for 20 minutes you arrive to the Sacro Monte of Saint Francis of Assisi. This reserve is truly amazing, having over 20 chapels depicting the life of Saint Francis. It's manicured gardens in autumn colours can be seen as a place of spiritual reflection. The frescoes and wood carvings date back to the 15th... More

Short walk from the city of San Giulio uphill and you will find yourself in a complete different world. If you go in the morning, you might be the only visitor. Around 20 oratory's and a church are spread out in a nature reserve, most from 16 century and dedicated to the life of Franz from Assisi. Nice walk trough... More

A tour guide recommended the walk up to Sacro Monte di Orta. The site is reached up a steep cobblestone walkway past the Parrish Church. The top is a series of chapels with statues describing the life of St Francis and the founding of the Franciscan Order. I walked the circle of chapels and found them colorful. There is an... More

Sits on a hill above town. There is parking if you have a car or there is a path to walk from town if you like. There are 20 well preserved chapels that tell the story of St. Francis of Assisi. The life sized statues are very detailed amazing if you think about when they were made. Great view of... More

The walk seemed long and tiring because of the heat and took about 30 minutes to walk up the cobbled hill. Sacro Monte is a complex of 20 chapels dedicated to St Francis of Assisi who devoted his life to the gospel and lived out his Christian faith by caring for both people and animals. He was known as a... More

Our destination was the little village of Orta San Giulio, at the foothill of Sacro Monte. It happened that you cannot enter with the car in Orta San Giulio and there are parking lots all around. One of these lots is on the top of the Sacro Monte (and you can park for free for 2 hours, while the other... More

Take the time to research the history of this spectacular place. We took a guide with us that was a historian of the area. The history and importance of this special place is incredible. Visit the church, the cemetery and the 21 sacramental buildings. Worth the time to walk up the hill. The views from here of lake Orta are... More

Sacro Monte chapels that are all over the hill above the lake Orta are extremely impressive structures devoted to the life of St. Francis. Beautiful frescoes (basically under open sky) give the travelers unforgettable impression and spiritual inspiration. Wonderful place to visit and to spend 2-3 hours moving from one chapel to another.

This is an amazing tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi, a truly must see, worth the small climb up the hill. Visit all the old from 15th century wooden sculptures and temples with tributes denoting his life stages from birth to death and canonisation. The views here of the Lake Orta are amazing too!
