Beautiful Castle

Beautiful Castle at the foot of the mountains. Great views. Has a steep walk up to the Castle on an uneven stone walk way but definitely worth the walk.

There's a free shuttlebus that ferries tourists from the Waltherplatz and back- we found it by chance- it just happened to pull up as we were setting off for the castle. Keep an eye out for it. The castle itself was very interesting- the extent of frescos quite unique- we spent a good hour exploring, the courtyard is in a... More

For us, the scenic walk to the castle, and the frescoes once inside were the highlights. Otherwise, the structure and history of the castle did not stimulate our interest as much. On a beautify blue sky warm April day we strolled on the pedestrian path along the river gently uphill, then we made the short steep ascent to the castle.... More

I walked along the river to the castle. It is a very lovely walk. You can actually walk up to the castle and higher even when it's closed and get a great view over the valley. Even if the castle is closed or you don't fancy going inside, it is still a great, easy walk out of town.

Castle Roncolo was not your classic fairy tale castle. It was worth the visit, not recommended for young children or people with limited walking ability. Lots of steps and stairs. Historical information was great.Took a shuttle-taxi from downtown Bolzano to castle, return service was somewhat delayed. Bring water and snacks!

It is quite a trek but interesting to see. We've been to several castles and palaces and unfortunately this one does not have as much as we'd like to see. (Wish they had more armour and items from the era.) We saw everything in under an hour.

Tristan and Isolde and the world of Chivalry feature in the frescos here. The castle was the setting in the Film DECAMERON in the early seventies There is a fresco of a fishing party - look to see a Lord offering a fish to a lady. The medieval equivalent to an indecent proposal!

It is a relaxing ~30 minute walk from the city. The castle is well maintained and has impressive wall frescoes in many of the rooms. It's well worth your time if you have 2-3 hours to spare during your visit to Bolzano. The view from the castle was fantastic on a sunny day!

This is a unique castle for its collection of well-preserved wall frescoes on secular, rather than religious themes. Some of these are from the 15th century, and they show the nobility at play, exotic animals, and a painted ceiling with sun, moon, and stars. Transport yourself back 600 years and you'll appreciate the foresight and imagination of the nobles who... More

Catch a free shuttle van from Walther Plaza for the short drive up to the castle or walk uphill for about 40 minutes. There is a fairly steep, rough cobblestone road to get up to the castle. Rooms, frescoes, stories, history and exhibits are well displayed with Italian, German, and often but not always English explanations. There are multiple staircases... More
