It's the centerpiece of the city. We were lucky enough to enjoy the carnivale sights outside and the inner beauty of the basilica. Of note you are. It allowed to bring backpacks into the building. This was initially an issue for us and many others. Thankfully we stayed nearby.

The building is stunning inside and out. Such beautiful designs and so lovely to wander around and take in all it has to offer. Luckily as we were there in low season it wasn't so busy but expect it to be mobbed in high season but well worth the visit

The basilica is truly a marvel. The golden mosaics everywhere truly glow, and the detail is amazing. The view from above over Piazza San Marco is breathtaking, and the museum with the original horse sculptures is well worth visiting.

Found this very easily we were amazed by the beauty of the square and all the buildings around. The carnival on Saturday just added a cherry on top. The people go to lengths by dressing up in the different attire.

The palace is very beautiful. Very interesting is when you cross the "Bridge of Sighs" (Ponte dei sospiri) where the prisoners last saw the sea and the sun and sighed, giving the name to the bridge. The dungeons are scary. Worth knowing.

In reviews I've read, this is a place you definitely must visit. Be prepared for a very crowded environment since this is a main stop for most tourists especially those from cruise ship with little time to spend. For those who want to explore, a point to remember that if you get lost there will be directional signs on the... More

Beautiful and unusual church that is the heart of Venice geographically and politically. A showplace of the Venetian republic with beautiful mosaics, a visit to Venice is not complete without seeing this.

In October it was so easy to drop in and out after a 5 to 10 minute wait, it's really not worth going just once because the light and mood ch ages and you simply cannot absorb all the details as people move along jostling - do PAY to go onto the altar, it's buttons and you are only here... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
