A beautiful place to see. It will be crowded and you need to plan time for that. But the time invested is worth the place.

This is certainly a breathtaking experience and I didn't even take the excursion upstairs. You can only admire the murals and statues in the cathedral and look in amazement the amount of work that still needs to be done to it. The only slight issue (understandably) is where you put your bags. Photography is not allowed but it is not... More

There is something tremendously humbling about looking up at the ceiling inside this magnificent building and seeing frescoes that have been there since the 13th-14th centuries. This is really the most astonishing place to visit. At this time of year, with fewer tourists, we were able to have a peaceful meander through and actually see some of the relics that... More

yes, it was a crowded afternoon but as a Catholic and art lover, I wanted to see the interior of the church. my daughter and I stood in line for at least 30 minutes, were admitted inside, climbed some stairs and then were told we would have to pay to see something. we turned around, reached the bottom of the... Visited the Basilica on a very sunny day and the ceiling was magnificent. The reflection off the gold mosaics in the ceiling can not be described. It is a must see. My last visit was on a foggy day and the Basilica was very dark inside.

The queue might be quite long but it moves really fast so do go in and have a look around. The inside of the Basilica is truly beautiful.

Very good. We enjoy our time. Just watch out for people coming to you and give you small pieces of pasta so the pigeons come feeding on your hands, then they will ask you for money because they have done that! I did get the modus operandi so I gave €2 but I was told it should be €5???? Eh????... More

It was worth paying to book a time slot and avoid the queues. The mosaics are lit up around 11.30 to 12.30 and I would definitely go between those times as the mosaics look so much more spectacular when lit up. The fee to go up to the small museum and loggia is worth it for the view (inside and... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
