Hop on the No.2 vaporetto from San Marco (San Zaccaria) across to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. It's the little island with the campanile bell tower. Unlike San Marco's campanile, the queue is minimal. I can't remember the cost, €5-6. There are no accessible...More

A Venetian friend of mine advised me to the Campanile here rather than St. Marks because there is no line and you get an amazing view back at Venice-

Get the Vaparetto from S.Marco or S.Zaccaria (10 euros return, Line 2). Get the lift up the bell tower for the best view of Venice. Well worth the little trip over to the island.

Take a vaporetto over to the island (you will also get brilliant views is the Doge's Palace) and visit this lovely church with massive canvases by Tintoretto.

We stole someone else's idea and took a trip across to San Giorgio on the ferry. It was €6 each to go up the bell tower and the views were spectacular. You're directly opposite St Mark's square and the Doge's palace and you can view...More

We caught a vaporetto to S. Zaccaria and then switched and caught one across to S. Giorgio. We were on the small island across the canal from S. Marco. Here we walked through the church of San Giorgio Maggiore and paid to use the lift...More

As spectacular as the church building and the art inside is, what really sets this church apart is the spectacular view you get of San Marco from the clock tower. The €6 entrance fee is well worth it. You even get people taking wedding shots...More

Just a short waterbus ride from St. Marks and the hustle and bustle is gone. The view from the camponile is worth every penny.

We took a waterbus to San Giorgio and looked around the impressive church. We took an elevator up to the top of the tower from which the views over Venice were really stunning as it is situated directly opposite St Marks.

The church itself is pretty and the views of Venice from the ground and the bell tower are great. The staff on the ticket desk are rude however.

We always buy a vaporetto ticket for the week we are staying in Venice so I am not sure about the ruling on two separate trips. I my view it is probably just as cheap to buy a day ticket and you would be able to hop on and... More

San Georgia Maggiore is south-east of Piazza San Marco - we were there just before sunset last winter and the colours of the sunset were most intense over the island of Giudeca - more to the west, as might be expected.
