The Venetian cemetery is worth a trip even if you hadn't planned on leaving the main island grouping of Venice. The church, the famous grave sites and the island itself are all lovely. I would recommend this for a sunny day -not necessarily hot- but imagine it would be manageable in the rain as well. We looked for the grave... More

Get a water bus over from the Fondamente Nove to this little island, which is the cemetery of Venice. It is beautifully arranged, extremely neat and well maintained. Altogether really peaceful. You can see tombs of writers, musicians, and the ordinary local people side by side, telling the story of thousands of everyday lives. Dogs not allowed.

The only place in Venice we hadn't visited. Puts us to shame when it comes to our cemeteries. A beautifully kept, peaceful island. All graves have flowers and are well looked after. Soo peaceful. No photos and must be dressed appropriately when visiting. If there could be one place to be put to rest it would be this island .

If you are not terrified of being in a cemetery, and you are interested in Italian sculptures and gardens - you will like the Venetian cemetery island. I found it very interesting to see the big family tombs, the statues and the beautiful flowers.

We were keen to stop here before we got to Venice and on our way over to Murano in the afternoon, got off the vaporetto for a walk around. The island is quite spectacular - not sure there is an island cemetery of comparison anywhere else in the world. Its really interesting to walk around and look at the gravestones,... More

Venice cemetery is almost as extraordinary as Venice itself. The church of San Michele is beautiful but if it's closed on Sundays (?). Strange... There is very international feeling with people from all the world sleeping here and reflecting the international status of Venice. Between them Igor Stravinsky and Ezra Pound.

This walled island cemetery with its cypresses looks melancholic and mysterious from across the water, especially from Fondamente Nove. I'd never visited it before on my trips to Venice, so I decided to take the vaporetto there, especially to pay my respects to the great Ezra Pound. But I had no luck. His simple gravestone had disappeared under shrubbery and... More
