Worth venturing out of central Venice for if that is where you are staying, stay for a meal at sunset looking out over the lagoon (recommend Da Alvise restaurant) and enjoy that too after visiting the other islands.

Over the years, we have arrived at Venice by car, train and plane. It's an amazing city regardless of how you get there. If you happen to be arriving by plane, you will note that the airport is several miles from the center of Venice. You will have 3 methods to get to the city -- vaporetto (boat/bus), car taxi,... There are many places to sit and enjoy the sunsets or to sit and watch the boats going about their business. The water is not so clean with Venice using this a dynamic sewage system to flush away things. Try to get to Dorsoduro area to sit and watch the laguna and its offerings. If time permits there are plenty... More

The light coming off the Laguna is so amazing it explains why Canelletto and other famous artists have painted it so often It is so different from any place I have been. A real mystery color and unforgetable.

By going to Murano and travelling on different water buses we were able to see so much of the island and especially the fantastic skyline of San Marco as we headed away from and then back to the island

The Vaporetto to Burano or the water taxi to the airport tranist the lagoon and provide unmaatched views of Venice and its landmarks. A great experience.

I loved being on the lagoon going from island to island - it is a great way to take in the sites and to remind you that you are in an amazing city that is floating on the sea. A perfect day.

The lagoon in Venice has an incredible and impeccable view that amazed people from generation to generation. I am stunned by its ethereal nature beauty, enchanting culture and enriched history. This is where the story of Venezia begins, and for sure (hopefully, without the threat of the rise of sea level) it will last forever.

The laguna of Venice is like a busy motorway in some parts but it blows you away and is a must do experience either by vaporetto , taxi or even some of the hotel transfer boats

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
