Good to get out.

Whether it's just a trip around the city's perimeter or a visit to an outer island (we only saw Murano), going out on the lagoon provides you with yet another side to the city.

Had the special opportunity to traverse the lagoon at night in the bow of a cruise ship, one of many tours from Venice) and watching the shore covering The Grand Canal to St. Marks Square to Lido to the open Anionic Sea through the shipping channel brings home Venice as a global sea port both yesterday and today. It also... More

If you have time, take a vaporetto to one of the islands, for example Burano. The trip itself makes it already worthwhile. Beautifull vista's everywhere, very romantic and relaxing.

It has to be crossed to get to Venice and to be honest it is the most beautiful shuttle I have ever had to get to a holiday.

To be honest I have no love of the Lagoon, it is like a motorway, just a means to and end i.e. getting to the Islands that are so wonderful. The vaporettas and other boats give a great service.

This provides the best view of Venice, with all the churches, boats, vaporettos, gondolas and palaces. Especially beautiful sunset.

There is many big excursion boats circling around the bay, which has some spectacular views over main island as well as neighboring ones. Few good bars are located here too.

We took the Vaporetto from St Marks Square to Murano and that route sails through the lagoon. It takes about 45 minutes but it's very interesting.

We had a great vaporetti trip across the bay at sunset in the rain. Beautiful views of Venice from the Lido stop and well worth the trip.

Venice isn't just palaces, churches and art museums. Enjoy a boat tour on Venice Lagoon and discover the magical islands Murano and Burano.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
