We heard about the Feast of Sant'Effisio before we left the UK and were disappointed to see that the great procession left Cagliari on the day before we arrived but it is one of these processions which comes back from its destination with almost as much pomp and ceremony as when it goes away. It was there the 4th May when we set out at around 8.30pm, after a quick bite to eat, to find somewhere to sit and watch the return of the statue and its attendants at anywhere between 9 and 10 o'clock.
As it turned out the procession started about 9pm and went on until well after 10pm when the oxcart carrying the effigy of the saint made its appearance accompanied by seemingly all the horses and most of the people of Sardinia!! The costumes, music and general friendliness of all the people made it the highlights of our holiday.
We visited the church of Sant'Effisio later in the week and found it still highly decorated with beautiful red roses and still obviously very much in the people's mind as several locals were making the own homage to the saint while we were there. Although small it is beautifully sculpted and kept with a fine staircase leading to the altar and well-kept chapels around the edge of the building.
As with many of the sights of Cagliari it may not be easy to find but it is certainly worth seeking out as are the two other churches in the close vicinity.

This little church is stunning and it is where I was married!! The setting could not be more perfect and for those who couldn't fit into the little church there is a bar right in front to have a wee drink ;0)

This church is an important site with big emotional meaning for all sardinians, and particularkly to the devout Cagliari citizens.
