Sicily's greatest natural attraction is also its highest mountain: Mount Etna, at 10,990 feet, is the most active volcano in Europe and the oldest recorded active volcano in the world.

Definitely don't go when there are a lot of clouds. We was there on such day and we were really disapointed with this attraction. The cable car is not cheap and without the view it is not worth the money at all!

My wife and I took a tour from the ship docked in Messina. We visited 2 places, Mt Etna and the town of Tauramina. It was clear and cool and the bus went up the very winding road to the volcano(inactive at the moment but...More

A must see. Great views from the coast and the approach roads. Take a walk to the crater but take care and wear sturdy shoes with good grips. You will also need a jacket as it is chilly. There are a few shops and cafes....More

While I don't remember noticing the mountain/volcano when walking about Catania, you certainly see it when coming into or leaving the city. it is a grand view.

We were with a group in the Catania area and it snowed up on the mountain. We had a clear day and the view of the mountain was Spectacular. It was great to be able to be so close to Etna and enjoy the view!

This was something we were set on doing, we booked through the B&B, the guide, Alessandro (I think!) picked us and other tourists up and spent the half day with us, climbing on Etna, explaining the geological side of things and ending in a typical...More

We drove up the south side of Mt Etna from Catania up to the cable car, where the cable car can take you higher. Even at this lower elevation (Rifugio Sapienza (1900m)); the air was quite cool, so be prepared with cold weather gear, especially...More

We'd booked a day trip from Catania and then paid extra for the cable car and near-summit tour. Soooooo cold at the top where there was a fresh coating of snow and a howling gale for the short hike to an old crater (stunning views)...More

but there are all kinds of things growing out of the lava and ash, you'll see. When you reach the area where only guides can take you to the top, beware. The groups are 80 people big, you must wear mountain boots and a helmet,...More

Hi, I would go up to Point Sapieza and take a cable car. It looks quite steep, plus it is made from a black volcanic rock so I woudn't walk unless you have proper shoes and are accustomed to these type of walks. I would have... More

I think it is better to stay in Catania then in Taormina because it is easier to go to Etna and faster. But if you plan to travel in August I think you need some nice beach place between Catania and Taormina. If you travel... More
