We were headed from Messina to the mainland. Not sure when we would arrive. Used GPS to locate ferry entrance, bought our ticket, cued up, boarded, and locked the car. The trip across is not long. Many people clustered around the food bars. I went forward to enjoy the view. (In nice weather choose the view.) Exiting was very efficient.

LAst week after purchasing a return ticket to Sicily I arrived Messina to board and , having purchased ticjet online I presented the ticket on the phone I was requested to present the printed ticket from the first trip. I was not expecting this and presented on my phome both invoice and PDF ticket. The 2 guys on the desk were absolutely unfriendly, unhelpefull and only requiring me to pay a new ticket. I demanded to talk with their manager and they absolutely didn't take any action-. Only the guy that was organizing the lanes outside : Vicenzo , had a positive attitude and tried to calm things, In the end I found the paper that was given to me in the previous trilp more than a week before, and solved. Not to the attitude of the guys in the ticket desk. It looks that is an attitude from the company. If they sell online, they shoudl accept on phone or even reprint, it's normal with airline boarding pass. Also boarding cars is a disaster, a total lack of organization.

I was very pleased with my travel on the Sansovino. I booked an outdoor cabin online, and had to exchange my voucher at the ticket office at the maritime office which opened at 3pm. The port has a lot of construction and it is a bit confusing, but I found the gate for foot passengers and was able to board at 7pm. The cabin has bunk beds and is very clean. The ferry is old and not a lot has been done to glitz up the place, but everything is clean and acceptable. Dinner options are served once the ferry leaves, and there is sufficient variety. In the morning, I was impressed by the fresh and crisp cornetti and the excellent cappucino. It is worth getting up early to watch Stromboli and Panaera pass by and watch people going on and off each island. I recommend this as an easy way to travel to the islands and on to Sicily.

We never took the ferry before and this was a pleasant experience. Just make sure you have your computer generated reservation turned into a ticket at the bollentina and then scanned by the agents near the car entrance. The staff are very helpful.
