We visited Palermo for a few hours on our Mediterranean cruise and, as we had such a short time, we decided to take one of the sightseeing tours to get a general feel of the city. The idea of a little motorised "train" tour appealed to us as an alternative to the familiar hop on/hop off bus. For 10 euros each we could take an hour long tour with one stop near the Cathedral. We would be able to alight there to explore the surroundings, and then take another "train" to complete the tour, as they ran at half hourly intervals. We were directed to the start point in the street across from the port entrance and, as it was close to 10am, we reckoned that we would be just in time for the next journey. Unfortunately for us, we were first to arrive, and the driver then spent the next 45 minutes directing new customers to the ticket office until the "train" filled up. We were almost ready to give up and demand our money back when he decided that it was time to set off. The "train" then bounced through the city streets, but quickly deviated from the main route shown on the map and took the alternative route designed to avoid traffic jams, but it seemed to make little difference and we were caught in congestion. There was very little audio commentary of the sights we were supposed to see, and the fumes from the surrounding traffic made the journey uncomfortable. The lurching nature of the "train" also made the taking of photos along the route impossible. After 30 minutes we reached the scheduled stop between Palazzo Dei Normanni and the Cathedral, by which time we had decided that enough was enough. We got out and completed the remainder of our journey on foot. In conclusion, it was a bad choice, and even worse than we could have expected from the standard hop on/hop off bus. For the same money (or even less), we could have hired a taxi!
