Great Views of the Sea

At the tip of Ortigia, this castle offers great views of the sea and the town. There is also a pretty good art exhibit. Worth a visit.

The most important parts of the castle - the medieval parts - are closed, but it's worth a visit to wander along the sea walls and the much more modern gun batteries.

Well worth a visit. Views across the sea are nice. A few euros each to visit, wouldn't do it on a hot day though. Small museum. Slide show in Italian. Allow a few hours to explore and take photos.

Amazing old, partially restored fortress. Parts are from the 12th century up too the 20th. Not much fun nterpretation so take a guide book. Well worth it for the views alone

For 2 Eoro each, my husband and I enjoyed exploring the fortress and castle grounds, along with a small museum. The castle is under renovation and was not open but we had plenty of other areas to see in the complex.

The Castello can get ferociously hot if visited in the heat of the day, but go underground into the cellars and armoury to search out some refreshing cool. This is a wonderful hour's explore with history book in hand - there is a guide book at the entrance kiosk which is worth purchasing to get an understanding of the Castello's... More

We planned on visiting as much of Siracusa as possible while traveling the southeast section of Sicily and especially didn't want to miss the Castello Maniace. A beautifully architectured structure sited prominently on the southernmost point of the island of Ortigia. We were not disappointed as we came upon the castle, but were soon saddened by the fact that the... More

Reading some of the not satisfied reviews for this wonderful castle, I was not so keen on visiting. But fortunately, I went to have a look and I spent 2 unforgettable hours. I felt I am really going back to the Frederick II age in Sicily. Hard to describe all my feelings, but I completely suggest the visit!

Having been brought up on the South Welsh borders, I'm both a sucker for an historic castle and also regularly disappointed by many of them, as they don't cut the mustard compared to the ones I romped round as a nipper. As we wandered towards the top end of Ortygia Island at the spit end of Syracuse town, I spotted... More
