I stayed on top of this Latomia- at Hotel Villa Politi and could only view the entrance from a balcony inside the hotel. In fact that quarry was the reason for choosing that hotel, only to discover online that it was closed Wednesday but open all others. Then I was told it was closed every day except weekends. No notice posted anywhere - only the hotel knew it. This Latomia is the largest and historically most important: Thucydides narrates how Athenian soldiers were brutally held as prisoners of war. The site itself is overgrown, has had earthquakes, an open air theatre built; its scale ruggedness is extremely moving. It doesn't have a cute tooth shaped cut like the 'Tooth of Dionysus' but it surpasses other Latomie in historical importance. Just don't trust anything you see online about the opening hours.…

Siracusa has much to offer. Perhaps,too much. The incredible Greek theatre, the Duomo etc. I was most of all moved by the Latomie of the Capuchins where, according to tradition, the captured Greeks were imprisoned, withered away and perished. Much more moving than the Ear of Dionysus. And far less visited. Very memorable.…

The latomie dei Cappuccini is the oldest quarry of Syracusa. You'll take the steps down to the gorges of the quarry where you can stroll around to escape the lunchtime heat. The landscape is varied. It could/should be cleaner (they should take away old foliage, maybe plant some flowers), but it's fun. It's quite far off the centre, though.…

From Ortigia you can get one of the small buses (2 I think) up to this Latomie for 1 Euro. (opposite is the war memorial on the cliff top) There are guided tours (11.00, 12.00 I noticed) but we arrived at the wrong time. Quiet, not many visitors apart from primary school children taking part in organised activities in different parts of the Latomie. Not a lot to see, but if you have time, do visit.…
