This is the first catacombs we had visited so had nothing to compare it to. They seemed vast and apparently are much wider than the ones in Rome. They started off as a greek aquaduct and then when they dried up they were turned into burial places. The tour is by a guide only and took about an hour. It was a struggle to understand some of what the guide said but still understood enough.

The visit was a bit of an anti-climax. Having visited the Catacombs in Paris I often made comparisons between the two. You aren't able to explore at your own pace here and there isn't reading material to read. Instead your pay a high fee to be escorted around and told the history in Italian and English. Unfortunately I found the poor commentary costly for a half a hour tour. I would recommend if you are visiting you should bring a cardigan or jumper as it gets colder than expected.
