The Italian Alcatraz. Da vedere!
Oct 2017 • Family
Travel down memory lane, visiting the Italian Alcatraz. Impressive place: the Tuscan island of Pianosa went from minimum security agricultural jail in the 19th century to maximum security jail following the famous "anni di piombo" in the 20th century, and to natural reserve in the 21st century. One of the Italian heads of State stayed there under Mussolini, when the prison had a political section. So did members of the Brigate Rosse and various top Mafia bosses, who stayed there in complete isolation where tourists can now cycle with a guide. Worth seeing!

I Wonder What it's Like After the Boat Departs!
Sep 2016 • Friends
Went with the Aquavision Boat from Elba and took the walking (or trekking as they call it) tour. The commentary was in Italian so I didn't learn much and Googled some information after I returned. All well organised by Aquavision.

The visit reminded me of when I visited Chernobyl. This was a ghost island complete with ghost town and ghost infrastructure. Of course there were the other 249 day trippers for company, but they mostly headed for the beach. We therefore explored the deserted town and felt something of the atmosphere of a disbanded community.

At 5pm we all got back on the boat and returned to Elba, leaving Pianosa at peace with its seabirds and its handful of residents. What would it have been like to stay?

Beautiful island with sad story
Aug 2016 • Couples
Pianosa is small island about half an hour from Elba that was in the past prison colony. Nowadays it's abandoned island where you get feeling that time almost stopped and you can just try to imagine how life used to pass there before last prisoner left. The number of daily visitors is strictly limited what's great as you don't need to fight for place on the beach with another visitors and enjoy the silence of the island :-) But what makes Pianosa really special to me is it's crystalline water, whiter sand and mysterious atmosphere of the island.

Mr. Carlo guardian of the catacombs
Jun 2016 • Family
Pianosa has a lot of history and deserved to be visited. Don't particularly recommend the tour with aquavision as after that won't have enough time for swim, eat, visit the catacombs and abandoned buildings.
We realised that we didn't have much time to see the catacombs and were really sad about it.
Luckily mr. Carlo, a man born in pianosa took us around and explained us in a few minutes a few bits of its history. It was sensational! Thanks Carlo to have been so kind with us.

Fantastico !

We went with Aquavision from Marina di Campo to Isola di Pianosa. On the island we went snorkeling and did the guided tour with the horse and wagon.

As well for us as for the kids this was a great experience.

Fascinating, amateurish, endearing visit
Aug 2015 • Couples
A flattish, quite arid, fascinating Mediterranean island that was occupied and deserted many times in many different ways over the centuries.

As an active jail location with crumbling abandoned infrastructure you can only visit bits of it, and will get some insight only by joining organized tours - options include snorkeling, village and catacombs visit, horse-driven cart tour, hiking. On busy days, very few of these options are available.

We tried and enjoyed two events.
The first was a visit to the catacombs, with a plausible, self-declared native guide who volunteered to bundle a commented walk around the village and some insight on the recent and longer history of the place with it.
The second was a ride on a cart, with another guide providing some intriguing comments on nature and history, mostly focused on the two spells as soft rehab-focused agricultural jailhouse for well-behaved prisoners, and most recently as a maximum security, hard regime jail for organized crime convicts.

In between, we had a very reasonable lunch in the one bar and restaurant available: simple food, much better and better served than you would expect from a sole option. And we bathed at a nice beach, less crowded than comparable ones on the main Elba island.

Fascinating, under many respects, if you are willing to put up with a bit of approximation from passionate, likely competent tour guides.

A full day visit is the most obvious option. You may stay at a hotel, which would allow you to try different tours in different days. Make sure you arrange it in advance when booking your trip.

A wonderful experience
Jun 2014 • Couples
I would really recommend to spend a day visitnig with small island, natural park. In fact there are so many interesting thing to see, smell and appreciate. Thre access to Pianosa is limited : no more than 250 persons per day. MOst part of the island being a integral park could be visited only with an authorized guide. The island was a prison for so many years and for the last 150 years public access was not feasible. So the environment is really natural. The see is simply wonderful; the is only one beach where is possible to access openly. Here snorkeling is reaaly an experience ! When you are on the unique boat ahving the permit to go to Pianosa the guides explain to the visitors the many alternatives to visit the island: Museum, Prison, by mountain bike, snorkeling, by carriage , by bus. On the island thare are basically no services: only a simple restaurant/bar/toilettes. Summarizing :visit Pianosa. You will not forget it!

More than only beach
Did you know that, beyond the wonderful crystal sea and sand beach, on the small Pianosa Island you can have a guided visit of ancient catacombs, ruins of the old prison city and unique uncontaminated landscapes?
