Amongst the many famous things to see and do in Florence it could be easy to miss the church of Santa Maria Novella, but it really ought to be one of the must do sites. In both the main church and separate Spanish Chapel it contains some of the most beautifully painted chapels in the city. My advise is to... More

Santa Maria Novella was beautiful from start to finish. The church itself has unbelievable frescoed chapels - such colour and vitality! The cloisters are beautiful and serenely quiet after the buzz of the city outside. The stonework is beautiful too, with regular black and white tracery on arches. A lovely place to visit.

This is a beautiful old church. If you get a chance, I highly recommend going to a service, even if you don't speak the language. The space is definitely meant for the grand solemnity! In addition, I would recommend a bit of background research. There is so much interesting history attached to the church

Beautiful church. I love the green and white architecture prevalent throughout Florence. The church is lovely. Even though I am nonreligious, I appreciate the craftsmanship dedicated to the construction of the church.

Beautiful inside and out! If you plan to visit a lot of sites consider the Florence pass. It cuts down on the queues and is a good value.

This lovely church is located near the Main train station which was named after this church. A very huge church that can accomodate many churchgoers. The interior is good and the facade is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture. For Catholics, a nice place to visit for short prayer or if it is a Sunday, a nice venue... More

This Church was a stop on a bus tour. Beautiful and a must see while traveling in Italy. The lines were not long to get in and the photos we were able to take were amazing.

A very large church so allow plenty of time to see all the different zones. It's nice to sit and take it all in, there are benches out front

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
