This 19th century piazza has undoubtedly the best panoramic view of Florence. The square is decorated with copies of Michelangelo's sculptures, but it's the view people come here to see.

A geat viewing point to look out over the city, the city walls, the Arno etc. Taking multiple photos is irresistible! There are plenty of refreshment kiosks and tourist tat stands but no shade on a hot day. It's quite a steep walk up to the Piazzale so if you don't fancy that there are busses or cabs.

A must go for breathtaking view in Florence. Walk along the river and step up for the best experience. Good to go with a wine bottle :)

We followed the suggestion in our Rick Steves' book and took a cab up to San Miniato (fabulous) and walked down, first to the Piazzale Michelangelo, then down the stairs through the Oltrarno neighborhood of San Nicollo. The views were amazing, and a young couple were taking their wedding pictures, which was sweet to watch.

Amazing views of the city. However, I really enjoy the walk up to the Piazzale. You can take the steps from San Nicolo or walk up the tree lined viable through Ferrucci.

Breathtaking views over Florence, but gets very very busy at sunset. Get there early if you want a front row spot for the sunset. A 20 minute walk from the river up some steep very steps, but well worth it. Plenty of stalls, postcard sellers, gelato, etc.

Who so ever said that "all good things in life are free", must have been talking about the view from here. You can drive, walk or get the tour bus to this place. But you will love the view. It probably trumps the view from top of Duomo also.

You'll have Florence at your feet! Immense open Piazza to showcase views across the Arno of all the Florentine landmarks: the Duomo and Campanile are the main eye-catchers, but as you continue gazing, you'll notice the Uffizi and many many churches. You're placed above the hustle and bustle. Within a few minutes' walk are two chuches--notably the San Miniato al... More

I walked up the top just before sunset and was in photographers heaven with the views. Lots of people but you could still get great photos. Awesome vibe with live music and perfect view of Florence

Staying in Piazzale Michelangelo

Neighbourhood Profile
Piazzale Michelangelo
Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!
