Refreshing for Florence because you find real parishioners offering worship here. Not a museum church, the exterior is unfinished simple Gothic. On the interior, there are interesting frescoes that reveal a glimpse of the 11th century. Beautiful place to simply contemplate the centuries since.

Compared to the many sumptuously decorated churches of Florence this one is plain by comparison- but by no means is it bare. There are some lovely frescoes and art work, even if not by the more famous masters of Italy. As there's I still no fee to visit and it is on the way from the Duomo to Santa Maria... More

We only found this church as it is opposite our hotel When we finally went in we were amazed how beautiful it is on the inside, really charming and a proper church with candles lit, regular Masses and the statues and frescoes beautifully displayed. Worth a look if you get the chance and it's free to get in.

The Santa Maria Maggiore is a small unassuming church on Piazza Santa maria Maggiore in Florence. Less glamorous than her sister churches in Florence the Santa Maria Maggiore has lovely frescoes and artwork on the inside. Nice!

Here we are in the 21st Century looking back to the 14th. Stop and try and imagine how you can change your life and that of others to reflect how they in the 14th Century belived the world ought to be. Its beautful inside....quite different from the consumer orientated world on the outside....

I stumbled upon this Cathedral by chance. It's very unassuming from the outside. Curious, I went inside. I found the frescos and artwork to be quite beautiful and took many pictures. Many reviews read that it pales in comparison but I was glad I stopped and took a peek.

Santa Maria Maggiore is a great church in the hearth of Florence that will give you a different idea from the other "magnificent" churches in town. I will recommend this place first because is not really that busy as many other churches in town and also because you get a much more intimate feeling than other places.

It is an ancient church, mainly medieval kind, beautiful but not as much as Santa Maria dei fiore. Jist get inside to feel the atmosphere.

Camera optional, 20-30 minute visit. Good for a rest but not a "must see". This 12th century church renovated into the gothic style in the 15th century is as classic as it gets for an Italian church. There are masses and functions during the day like any other church and some signs describing the frescos and history of the location... More

Santa Maria Maggiore (free entry) is one of many church visits you can make in the Historic Centre of Florence. This is an early 10th century house of worship situated in between Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), San Lorenzo and Santa Maria Novella and can be conveniently visited for those who have time and enjoy church visits. The exterior facade... More
