This was a two hour walking tour around the centre of San Gimignano. It provided a real understanding of why and how the town was formed, and why medieval towns are built this way. The walk is quite leisurely and easy, the views are fantastic and the area overall is brilliant. The guide we had on the day was incredibly passionate and helpful. And the price - excellent value for money.

The tourist information office is a great place to start. Easy to find in the largest piazza, although not at the entrance of the city, from either end. Go there first for helpful maps and to plan visits that have specific hours. Check on line while planning your visit from home.

This whole town is worth a visit. There are 14 towers that survived out of the 76 that were originally in the town. The towers were built as private fortresses and signs of their wealth. There are shops, galleries and my favourite gelato shops. You can wander for hours around the different street and see signs of the medieval times everywhere.

We found two very good restaurants with great dishes and a perfect view to the two towers. Very romantic, especially at night
