About
The magnificent complex of the Cathedral of Siena, its Duomo, houses a series of some of the most important monuments of the European artistic panorama. With its more than one million visitors every year, the Cathedral without a doubt represents the fulcrum of the entire complex, while other significant elements include the Crypt, the Baptistery and the Museo dell'Opera, all part of the impressive mass formed by the "Duomo Vecchio" (Old Cathedral), and the "Duomo Nuovo" (New Cathedral). Visitors will travel along a memorable itinerary to the discovery of self and the truth of faith through culture and art, the result of more than a millennium of Western history.

- Brenda SAuckland Central, New Zealand42 contributionsClimbing to the roof is such a thrilling experience. We did the Gate of heaven tour which allowed us to climb into the vault and view the Cathedral below. The marble floor looked like a carpet so beautiful. It was wonderful to see the art work / sculptures that decorate"the heavens" up close. Truely a remarkable place and so iconic of Siena in its black and white stripes.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 April 2023
- Lisa LVancouver, Canada12 contributionsI must see while visiting the mediaeval town of Siena and it’s Gothic architectureThe cathedral is awe inspiring with many frescos and a nave lined with 172 popes heads statuary. Take a walk up the spiral staircase for a panoramic view of this mediaeval city. If you visit YouTube and Lisa Lancaster travels, you will find a playlist Europe 2023 and there is a video of this magnificent Basilica. - Lael POkanagan Valley, Canada254 contributionsAmazingThis Duomo is an eye full. So much to see that it is overwhelming in such an amazing way. We bought tickets at the booth the afternoon before and showed up in the morning just before 10:00 am when it opened. Others who had bought the priority tickets were admitted first, but we were inside within 5 minutes. The detail inside is breathtaking, photos do not do it justice and it needs to be seen first hand. We also climbed up to the Panorama viewing area and I would suggest that everyone do this. The views of Siena are incredible. What a beautiful city to visit. Thanks!Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2023
- WaterloonieSanta Barbara, California1,626 contributionsBreathtaking architectural marvel. The magnificence of the exterior does not really prepare you for the stupendous interior. You need at least the audio guide to begin to appreciate the art and architecture. Better yet, take a guided tour if you have time.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 May 2023
- Russ RPort Saint Lucie, Florida184 contributionsBeautifully PreservedThe Romanesque/Gothic cathedral is a beautiful representation of of the melding of art and religion. It is very well preserved and maintained. The mosaic floor is a work of art in itself and possibly the most impressive attribute. Some works of the masters of renaissance art are also displayed here including a small statue of Michelangelo himself. The library contains hymnals that are displayed and well protected. The duomo is very beautiful as well. When in Siena this is a must visit.Visited May 2023Written 4 June 2023
- AL_reviewer_2014Weymouth, United Kingdom145 contributionsI did it all and loved it allI arrived in Siena late in the afternoon and bought my cathedral ticket immediately. There was no queue at all – the next morning around 11 am the queue was insane. The ticket is valid for three days although you can only enter each area once. I bought the Porta del cielo ticket, which includes everything. At the same time I booked the cathedral climb for the next morning. I loved absolutely every section of the cathedral. The only queuing I had to do was for the panoramic viewing from the "Opera museum". If you can buy your ticket in advance, I highly recommend it.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 July 2023
- trebrys23Flint, United Kingdom8 contributionsA place that has the wow-factor!Absolutely spectacular! A place that has definitely the wow-factor! We paid to go to see the unfinished ramparts above the cathedral and it was well worth it. The views were spectacular, though the staircase leading up to it could be daunting for people who might not be fit. The library within the cathedral was just as spectacular and even succeeded in silencing my usually lively kids (aged 12 and 7)! I'd head there around 12pm in order to avoid the heat on sunny days...it was 4o degrees when we visited in August. You can easily spend two hours there just looking up and admiring the architectural beauty of the place. The Bernini statues in the little chapel to the right of the main altar were mesmerising. I bought a ticket online beforehand and it enabled us to jump all the queues in the sweltering heat. Possibly, it might be an idea to head up for the rampart walls before the queues form as they only allow people up around ten at a time?Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 September 2023
- SMLikestoTravelBengaluru, India277 contributionsStunning interiors. Don’t skip thisDon’t skip entering this Cathedral, it is even more stunning inside than from outside. Pulpit by Pisano, sculptures by Michaelangelo, artwork by Donatello, intricate mosaic floor - so much to take in and appreciate. And to top it all, there’s this library with 500 year old frescoes still intact.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 September 2023
- lucyjv2018Newbury, United Kingdom124 contributionsBeautiful - well worth a visitBeautiful inside and out, marvel at the marble floors and ceilings and all the frescos and paintings in between. Outside is simply marvellous, sit opposite in the shade and soak up the view. Don’t be put off by the queue, you can order your ticket on line and collect, its well worth it.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2023

Italy's most exquisite cathedral! The interior's lofty ceilings, floor-to-ceiling marble mosaics, columns of black and white marble, and elaborate sculptures really left me speechless. There's also the beautiful ceiling in the library. To exchange your pass for a genuine ticket if you bought yours through GetYourGuide, you have to line up on the LEFT side of the cathedral. After that, you can enter the cathedral without having to wait in line.

The cathedral is wonderful…a stunning place to see. The staff were the worst I have ever experience. The level of rudeness. If you ask a question they are annoyed at you and do their best to answer in the least number of words or even by grunt. I would not go back. A very complicated and annoying ticket system. The cathedral is broken into all these little parts and you need a ticket for each part. You spend most of your time running around the cathedral trying to find out where to get your tickets because nothing is clearly marked and the staff just wants you to go away.

Lovely and interesting visit. We particularly wanted to see the Michelangelo sculptures as we follow these all over Italy. Be careful if you buy the 3 day ticket which allows you entry to Duomo and surrounding stuff like the crypt etc. We were there for 3 days and it made sense and was really cheap ( around 14 E each ) but when we tried to enter the cathedral twice on 2 different days they said this was not allowed! A bit weird as it was a 3 day ticket.

We visited the Duomo when there were no entrance fees. An amazing iconic place with works from Michelangelo, Donatello, Ghiberti, Bernini. Incredible mosaic marble floor. Gothic architecture and art at its peak.

This huge cathedral can be seen easily from a distance but as you get closer to it, it becomes hidden by the surrounding buildings until you round a corner and are amazed by its beautiful facade. To enter, you must purchase a ticket (5 euros) to the left of the entrance. There are also other combination tickets that let you see additional parts of the cathedral complex. We purchased the 20 euro ticket that included the rooftop ‘Gates of Heaven’, nearby museum with a great view of the cathedral, baptistery and crypt. The price wasn’t cheap, but this let us fully experience everything that the cathedral had to offer.

Frescoes in piccolomi library are worth seeing. Cathedral itself is a cavernous baroque beauty and an essential Siena experience.

This is one of my favourite churches, both for its unusual architectural and decorative characteristics and for its floors. The entry fee of 8 euros seems reasonable, given the upkeep and maintenance that must be performed.

Beautiful Cathedral- unlike any other! The amount of detail that went into every inch of the construction of the Cathedral is incredible and worth the view. Highly recommend the Gateway to Heaven climb!

Where can I find the duomo's ticket office and when does it open? Also are the lines at the ticket office long early in the morning in August?

This ticket office moves around. In July 2022 it was to the left side of the Duomo (as you face the front of the Duomo). I was there on a Wednesday in mid-July, around 10:30 - 11. The line was very short.

In 2 abbiamo speso 50€
