A hidden gem

An absolutely amazing archive of the oldest documents I've ever seen. To be able to see and touch a land agreement (barter) from the 700's! Incredible.

Free and open to the public, but there are set entrance times of 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 a.m. Don't miss the view from the balcony, overlooking Piazza del Campo, the main city square!

The archives would be well worth a visit, even if they are not free. Don’t anticipate being shown hundreds of bundles of old documents. There are plenty of these but the jewels of the display are the Tavolette de Biccherna, the painted covers of the bound archives, of which a large number are displayed. Starting in the late 1300s with... More

I am not one for art galleries and museums as a rule but this was recommended and what an interesting hour so it was. Fantastic paintings from 13th century and shelf upon shelf of old accounts. A great view of Il Campo from the balcony

Absolutely not to miss if you are in Siena in the morning, monday to saturday. Access is FREE but allowed at specific hours i.e. 9:30 - 10:30 - 11.30. The most interesting part of the State Archive is the Museo delle Biccherne, where the covers of the Republic of Siena accounting books are kept, ranging from 13th to the 17th... More

It is tricky to find this absolute gem, but it's an amazing place and a must for anyone interested in books, history, culture or art. It is totally free and today there was no one else there when the tour started at 9.30 so I had a personal tour with my guide, Lorella, who made a huge attempt to communicate... More

When in Siena make a trip to the old city archives in Banchi de Sotto. Not easy to find, go inside the courtyard and up the stairs to a locked door. Free visits are offered at 930, 1030 and 1130 am to look at some of the old painted leather and wooden covers used for binding medieval documents. They date... More
