This is the church where St Francis started his journey, having renounced his wealthy up-bringing and military background. The cross is a copy, with the original being in the church of Santa Chiara in Assisi city. We were in a group of art historians and...More

It is about 1000 meters from the east exist of Assisi, Only problem it is down a steep hill through the olive groves. The church is small but very inspirational. We walked back to Assisi and the best part was the escalator. St Clair gave...More

A great place to learn more about the San Damiano cross and its importance to St. Francis and the church. A very interesting stop.

Very important historical church. Enjoyed learning more about the Clares and St Clare. Was lucky to have a Franciscan give us a tour.

This is perhaps the most reverent place that I have ever visited. It is a place for quiet prayer. It is possible to experience the presence of St Francis here.

Entering the first small chapel you're immediately struck by the years of prayer that have taken place there. It was so easy to spend time in spiritual contemplation. Not to be missed though quite a walk down and back up from Assisi.

Visiting San Damiano while on pilgrimage. This is a humbling, quiet, peaceful, and Holy site where St. Francis received the call to "Rebuild my Church" by Christ speaking from the San Damiano cross. This is where St. Francis started his ministry rebuilding the crumbling church...More
