This Basilica, in the valley below Assisi old village, was built over a period of 110 years or so to house and protect the small church that St Francis restored when he received hios original call to serve God. Both the Basilica and the little church are beautiful. Francis heard the message "Restore my church" and his first response was... More

In the midst of the surrounding areas to Assisi is Santa Maria degli Angeli, both a huge church and the name of the 'town' in which it is situated. It is a huge basilica and marks one of the most revered spots of St. Francis' life. Because it is situated only in a village, it is almost more remarkable to... More

Simply magnificent. The direct link with St Francis was particularly special for us. Busy but not crowded, a haven of peace despite the bustle.

A must visit place but need not spend too much time unless you're on a pilgrim. A chance to see the original church which St Francis built.

Go here on a Saturday evening at 9pm. The entire church is filled. Say the rosary. The procession goes onto the courtyard. You'll be given candles that will be lit after the rosary. I've been to this event more than once and find it life changing. I think the locals keep this going all year. You can web cam this... More

A beautiful church for prayer and reflection. The small chapel within the church, paintings and architecture are worth exploring.

This was a religious group tour of Assisi and Rome and this beautiful Basilica was just another wonderful experience of a lovely pilgrimage tour. We held a group mass here by our own very wonderful priests Father Mark and Father Grant from St Margaret Marys and Christ the King Churches. Uplifting experience that makes you feel for how St Francis... More

A guide book states that this is "The seventh largest church in the World" True or not, I have no idea, however it is very impressive both internally & externally, especially on an October late afternoon when the golden figure is lit by the Italian sunshine. It's a welcome fact that most of the churches that we visited whilst in... More

Go there for the portiuncula (chapel), the rose garden (with the roses without thornes), the place where Francesco died and where he ascended. And for the grotesque difference in the humble portiuncula and the wealthy cathedral (basilica)

This is a must. So many people miss it and go straight into Assisi. It is amazing. There is so much to see.
