This was quite a revelation, You get to it through the town wall just above and east of the Basilica and the description doesn't really do it justice . It it a delightful walking circuit down into the valley, full circuit some 5 km but can be shortened by turning round at the inn at lower entrance. By the way... More

beautiful and peaceful hike away from the crowds...and while you're here, check out Osteria del Mulino (a very pleasant surprise)

Friends who have been to Assisi a number of times were not aware of the Bosco (Woodland) experience. The 1.5 Kms walk to the Benedictine convent is well worth it. Beware it's steep, a little rough in places and feels more like 3 Kms each way. Tip - you can easily drive to the convent if some of your party... More

It was the last day of the pilgrimage and we discovered the gate in the wall and went through, rather like Alice entering the Wonderland. A new world opened up to us as we enjoyed the walk through the wooded valley to the little chapel and then on to the Third Paradise. Stunning views of the great basilica San Francesco... More

I just spent 3 weeks in Italy. Getting to kneel at St. Francis` tomb was a very spiritual experience for me. He lived until 1236 so kneeling there you could really feel The Holy Spirit. I was much more moved there than St. Peter`s Basicila, probably due to so many crowds in Rome versus not as many in Assisi.

Walking out of the Basilica of San Francisco I saw what I thought was a gate to a garden - it turned out to be a delightful wooded walk organised by the FAI (Italian equivalent and affiliated to English Heritage). This was an absolute delight through woodland being restored by the FAI - leading down to the 'Terzo Paradiso' art... More

A wooded hillside and valley with fields and remains of a convent have been restored to look as they did in St Francis's lifetime. You enter through a gate in the wall to the left of the upper entrance to the Basilica and go down steep but well tended paths. Great for kids who need room to run as well... More

Beyond the Piazza of San Francesco Basilica a pleasant surprise is waiting just there: maintained hiking path of rural landscape, forest, olive groves and no churches! About 3 hours of easy walk we fulfill the whole route down to the visitor center till the Terazo Paradiso and back. At the entrance we got a booklet of the route and explanations... More

Splendid shaded walk through history and time leading up to St. Francis D'Assisi. Separate trails, flat and uphill moderate but all worth stopping for.

Friends told us about this walk and we were delighted they did! We visited in August, so not only this was a journey that offered spiritual reflection, but also a welcome respite from the heat. I have no problem with the small charge (voluntary anyway and no more than the cost of an ice-cream, to put it in context), if... More
