If you are in Umbria, Italy, you have to visit Assisi and the Basilica. Better keep in mind though, that if the reason of your visit is religious / spiritual, you might want to travel to Assisi in one of the winter months. We were there in February, and the number of tourist groups was (relatively) low. This way we... More

It is lovely of course. But honestly, too noisy for me. A voice all the time saying :Silencio! But did the People around notice that? NO !

Such a beautiful setting on the hill above a valley. The basilica complex includes great art, a nice museum, upper and lower basilicas (very different, but both worth visiting), the crypt chapel with the tomb of St. Francis, and if course, wonderful food nearby. We attended Mass, too, which was inspiringly beautiful.

Excellent tour through the Basillica. Quite demanding for anyone with health or mobility issues. Well worth the effort.

Be ready for the climb and wear comfortable shoes. Huge Church on top of hill. They have Giotto's fresco of St. Francis feeding the birds

When I was last here, it was severely damaged by the prior earthquake. Was interesting to see the restoration, though I think most visitors are not aware of how much of what you see has been heavily restored. For anyone with interest in art or art history, it is a must-see. Because it is also a site for religious pilgrimage,... More

You would shortchange yourself if you did not see the Basilica when you come to Assisi, which millions of people do as it a very holy site. Huge building and filled with wonderful stonework and mosaics and of course history. I think a guided tour is the best but they do have the taped tour things with earphones which are... More

Enourmous cathedral. It can be very busy, so visiting in the off-season or early in the morning is recommended.

The church is beautiful inside and out. The inside has amazing frescos and I highly recommend the audio guide to explain the frescos to understand more about the place. If you listen to everything and follow the audio guide, it will take you about 1 hour to walk the place. But it's beautiful. And once you step away from the... More

St Francis is interred in the crypt of this cathedral which means that there is a perpetual stream of people coming to pay respects in the tomb. In the Summer it must be overwhelming. There is a constant murmur of no pictures as the gaggle of bus tourists compete for picture opportunities. The facilities are well restored and if you... More
