We were staying at a resort nearby and drove to Gubbio for the day. A small town, but very upscale. Apparently, the wealth is held by a few families. One of them makes cement and has factories around the world. Don’t miss the caged ride to the top for a great view.

When you tour these Umbrian hill-top towns, you realize how vertical and strenuous they are, and that you really need to pace yourself to see what is important to you to see. But sometimes it's hard to gauge just how far one piazza is from a cathedral, or special monument. By taking this Gubbio Express train, it allows you to rest your legs a bit, hear a tour person in your language with the headphones you get, look at video and pictures on the upper screen to enhance the narration, and be driven around the whole town, up the hills and down, to really get an orientation to where you want to return to and spend a bit more time. It might be touristy, but I would recommend it to anyone. We had 7 people ages 35-83, and it was perfect for us. Several families with young kids were on as well, and the kids were quite happy to be riding while their parents got a break and a history lesson at the same time. I would think that it would fill up very quickly in the summer months.

A really great way to see the town. A commentary in a variety of languages brings the history to life.

Trip through ancient Gubbio on a motor-powered theme-park type train sounds naff in the extreme. The realty is both fun and informative. For 8 Euros you het a 40 minute 7km tour round Roman and Mediaeval Gubbio with an informative commentary, albeit from a Vincent Price soundalike. We have been visiting Gubbio for over 30 years and now, sadly, my knees do not allow the walking we once did. This trip allowed us to see parts of the city we had not seen for years and also some new and interesting bits. All the staff were very helpful and the train immaculate. We went up and down some interesting hills and through narrow alleys mostly closed to vehicles. The main stop is in Piazza Grande, but we boarded at the stop for people with mobility issues on Piazza 40 Martiri. For anyone visiting the city for the first time or for just a day this tour provides an excellent orientation and pointer to other things to go and see. Have fun and enjoy it!
