These small, wooden boats can take you across the Rhine from Klein Basel (small and newer part) to Gross Basel (big and old part) or vice-versa. Though everything is walkable in the city, you can take one of the 4 boats from different points for a few minutes to relax and enjoy the view while indulging in some tradition. It costs 1.60... To cross the river Rhine with a small ferry boat is a must in Basle! There are 3 crossing points you can choos from. It gives you a different view on the city and the simple mechanisme by which it functions is woth a closer look.

In Basel there are 4 ferries ( Leu, Gryff, Ueli ) old original ferries and very modern one called ( Dalbe ) crossing the river Rhein from greater to lesser Basel cost per trip the same as a shorttime ticket of BVB (Baslerian public transport). These ferries are attached to steel ropes and float across the river Rhine by water... More

We bought Baselcard so it says it includes a free crossing by boat; so we asked around to try. Not a real boat ride but it was quick and fun!

Besides from several bridges crossing the River Rhine, taking the ferry boat to reach the other side is a nice alternative. It offers you different views of ancient Basel at a very welcomed reduced speed. Kids always love it, too.

This little boat(there are two, one by the Munster and one by the Paper Mill) are powered entirely by the current and a wire which keeps them on track across the river. A real novelty and very cheap, which is itself a novelty in Switzerland.

We came across this by accident, it is fun and a good way of getting to "little" Basel. It is inexpensive and you can claim you have sailed across the Rhine!

Travelled on a Saturday morning. Very cheap 1.60CHF. Wish the journey was longer. Sadly it only takes 5mins to cross the river.

While walking along the Rhine, we noticed this strange boat in the distance. As we got closer, we realized it was a passenger ferry and had to take a ride. As others mentioned, it is powered by the river current through the use of an overhead cable and a rudder that is flipped back and forth depending on the direction... More

It was a different way to across the river. It's a romantic, fast and cheap mean of transport. The view of city during the tour is very pleasant. I recommend it
