The Chateau is a beautiful building on the outside. The inside is used as office space so I was only able to see the interior courtyard.

we visited the castle with family in Dec 2016. We didn't go inside as we didn't have time, but from outside, it looked very beautiful and from the top it had great view of the old town and the lake,

You can only visit the interior of the castle as part of a free guided tour as it is always in use. Today the building is used as the administrative headquarters of the Canton. Most of the castle dates back hundreds of years and there are many coats of arms displayed of the various Counts and princes who have ruled... More

The guided tour gives a good overview of the canton's history as reflected in the chateau. Much of the chateau has been converted to serve the needs of the cantonal government but there are still some of the original features left inside.

The castle is transformed in a couthouse, parliament for the local governement, and offices. As such there is very little authentic things left. Just visit the outside and you have seen it all.

The chateau de Neuchâtel on top of a down-town hill is a place to see for anybody interested in history. From here you have an extraordinary view on the old town and can easily catch its development over centuries. Neuchâtel was a Prussian dominium (traces can be found all around) until the peaceful revolution in 1848 when it became independent... More

We enjoyed our time at the chateau, which we explored on our own - no other tourists or locals in sight. The buildings are beautifully maintained and very picturesque.

You can actually see just the patio of this chateau without taking organized tour, which is free of charge. It is close to the city center, the walk is agreeable and the views are beautiful

Be aware that there are specific times for the visits (they are all for free). Some guides might not speak well English and you might end up having very confusing explanations of the castle and the history of Neuchatel . The guide might easily switch to french if there are enough people understanding. The castle can not be visited without... More
