The Abbey Library St. Gallen, famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. And it holds one of the most important manuscript collections in Europe, especially for the Carolingian and Ottonian period from the 8th to the 11th century. The collection is presented to the visitors in changing and thematised expositions. The library forms the central part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Convent of St. Gallen.

This is an incredible room. Building the monastery began in the Ninth century and was known always as a spectacular place. The library is architecturally amazing, and is in pristine condition. The inlaid floors are particularly beautiful and feature pine, fir and cherry woods. The undulating book cases are hand carved, and magnificent. The baroque ceiling and murals are in... More

Not to be missed. Hire headphones for 5 francs as the information is so interesting and unless you listen to the information about the library, you will miss out on so much.

Visited St Gallen because of Abbey library. Took a train ride from Zurich n arrived at St Gallen in around one hour. Took a short walk to the library. Entrance into the library is free with the STP. We spent close to one hour inside. Suggest to rent the audio guide in order to better understand the library. Worthwhile visit.

This is well-worth seeing! This is an work of art in architecture! If possible get a guide to show you details of the library, the columns between the beautiful bookcases are doors that hold information about the books in that section. The ceiling is a work of art too! There are glass cases showcasing some of the 500 year old... More

We found the library on Trip Advisor and drove there from Konstanz. It was really amazing, looked like a historical film set except everything was genuine. A must see for book lovers!

The library was not as large as I had expected, and access very controlled. Large bags have to be left in lockers (which are free, however). Basically, it is really an extension of the abbey building itself, and the building itself is quite splendid, but as a retired librarian, the library part really did not work for me. The (very... This library is a gem not to be missed. The beautiful architecture, interesting displays, magnificent wooden cabinets, ingenious index cards and rich history all add to the delightful journey into the past.

A library of immense beauty, the baroque woodwork is unbelievable. It has the unity of being of one period, giving a blend of complexity and simplicity. A not to be missed attraction. The displays are well done, but difficult to grasp when one is in tourist mode. There are interesting displays in other rooms explaining the history of the library... More

Impressive in what a good shape the library is. It is comparable with libraries in Dublin or Oxford.

I had my backpack, and had to put it in a large metal crate they have in the hallway, but give you a bike lock for to lock it up. There are smaller lockers but by the time I left, there were 3-4 tour groups who had filled them up. I was there around 10, and by 11it was getting... More
