The Barrage (Dam) is an amazing engineering feat - 200 metres thick at its base. Take a guided tour inside the walls of the Barrage if you are not claustraphobic. Most people take the small cable car to the top of the Barrage and then walk around the Lac itself - through a series of tunnels to the open pastures... More

It's really huge, impressive! The best time to visit is late August - September when the lake is full. It is possible to make an easy hike flat along the lake (~2 hours) or more challenging via mountains (4h). Easy to get there by car.

The Grand Dixence Dam itself is not very interesting to me, but the surroundings are great for a long and challenging hike. We started at the Dam and took the "SENTIER DES BOUQUETINS". The first part, to the Cabane de Prafleuri, is a quite challenging climb through a rocky comb. Further up to the Col des Roux is even more... More

What a great place! Free parking. Start with a cable car journey to the top of the dam (10fr or 7fr one way) and walk along the top and around the lake. Find out about the dam from the information boards located around the site. We decided to walk around part of the lake (mainly in tunnels from "start" to... More

If you like big engineering, you should definitely take the tour inside the Grande Dixence dam. It is a great experience to walk through the many corridors inside the vast amount of concrete. My guide gave good explanations on the construction and was very friendly. Afterwards or beforehand, take the gondola to the top of the dam to see the... More

What a structure. Huge, beautifuly done ... And the landscape is breathtaking. Couldn't stop staring every 5 minutes !! Go between June-September... Best time to see it. Before June and after September, roads might be closed.

We made a visit to both the inside of the dam and did the entire Ibex hiking trail loop above the dam (4 hours). If visiting the dam, the hike is highly recommended. You take the cable car up from the base of the dam to the top of it, then begin the hike by following the well-marked signs along... More

After reading glowing reviews of the dam, we decided to go on a sunny day in early November. However, when we were nearly there, I learned from a road sign (and then asking locals) that the access road to the dam was already closed for the winter; I guess it closed at the end of October. So we drove up... More

Have been a couple of times. The drive up the valley is interesting, and then you get the first view of the Dam. Looks big but it's not until you get to the car park that you really go wow. Massive. Options to walk up or get the cable car. The walk along the lake is great and has options... More

The actual place is fantastic and the scenery spectacular. The setting stunning. What bothered us is the long wait for the cable car to both go up to the dam and coming down. We waited for almost 1 hour for each way. This was not good. The public toilets however were very clean and the prices at the restaurants quiet... More
