About
Also known as Alstadt, Zurich's historical center is a cool mix of old and new. It's home to iconic churches like the twin towers of Grossmunster as well as Fraumunster, which is famous for its stained glass windows. You can also climb up Lindenhof Hill for a bird's eye view of the town and walk the pedestrianized streets of Niederdorf and Limmatquai—they are lively with shops by day and packed with nightlife as the sun goes down. Join a walking tour to explore the medieval alleyways or hop on a cruise along River Limmat for a different view of the picturesque Old Town. – Tripadvisor

A nostalgic walk through Alstadt - the old town of Zurich
We took a walking tour through the old town of Zurich and were thrilled to see the medieval and old building still maintained in spic and span conditions. The roads were narrow and few pockets had access to tram and boat rides. The churches were marvellous with one of them providing an access to the top floor from where one can enjoy the magnicent views of the entire city with Lake.

Beautiful place to wander and observe
We loved walking through Old Town, on both sides of the river. We popped into the churches, ate, drank, shopped. Great place to just sit and relax with an Aperol Spritz and people watch. You can walk along the river as well. Must see place in Zurich.

    Charming, small and walkable
Old Town in Switzerland is a charming area to wander around specially during the early morning hours sans any tourists rush. The place is small enough to be walkable easily and has some very unique and old places to eat. Remember though, everything would be pricey - you are in Zurich :)

    Well preserved buildings
Zurich's old town is a maze of narrow, winding streets with well-preserved historic buildings. On our city tour our guide asked us to leave the bus for about an hour to walk down the streets of the old town including the bustling Bahnhofstrasse area which is a famous shopping street with luxury boutiques and department stores. The old town has many cafes, restaurants and shops. We shopped at one supermarket which had surprising low prices compared to the general high cost of living in Zurich. Munir D.

Check Out Rick Steves Walking Tour!
We had a wonderful time exploring the old neighborhoods and back streets along the river following the easy to read Rick Steves self guided walking tours. Take your time and check out all of the lovely cafes, museums and history. If you get tired, there is always a tram close by to take you there. Simply enjoyable without an expensive tour guide or noisy group 😀

    Very nice architecture
The Old Town in Zurich covers both sides of the river from what we could tell. If you're interested in architecture then this is the place for you with lots of interesting buildings. Some nice photo ops. as well. Check out both sides of the river because there are interesting areas on both sides and, again, some nice views. If you have time, take a wander by yourself which is what we did and we managed to find some lovely out-of-the-way places. A later guided walking tour took us to the main touristic areas and we did learn quite a bit about the city. Also worth doing.

Super Fun, Stylish, Clean and Friendly!
Did you know that you can drink water everywhere in Switzerland from the fountain (special hose) ! Beautiful downtown with lots of nice restaurants , where you can sit outside and watch the street crowd. There are many different types of shop and boutiques. Ice cream with every possible flavor. Convenient benches along little streets. Smiles, friendliness and impeccable cleanliness!

Old town Zurich is truly beautiful. All you may need is in this area. Shopping, restaurants, souvenirs etc. is there..not cheap of course but at lower prices. It is truly a clean and picturesque area . Be sure to check the lovely and intricate buildings on both sides of the lake when there. It is a must visit.

    Great walking area
Just getting off planes we needed to walk and see the sights. Streets are so clean, wonderful stores and even an Aldi where you can get a bottle of water for a really low price. Found a bank to change some dollars into Francs and so enjoyed the whole area.

    Must do while in Zurich
We stayed at Central Plaza hotel, which is only steps away from this historical site. The winding road, beautiful canal, tram and historical clock tower, endless shops and restaurants/bar are memorizing, especially during the early evening hours. Vibrant yet very safe area, which everyone could enjoy with ease.

The old town is quite walkable, but best to use the transit system to get into the area as parking is quite expensive if it is available. The views from the top of the Seilbahn Rigiblick are worth the ride up in a unique train, although there really isn't anyplace to spend much time once at the top. For a longer stop the overlook from the Lindenhof is cool and shady with seating areas.

I had a short, 2-hour stint in Zurich but it was such a blessing for this city to be compact, which made everything in 90 minutes. Walked on the east bank, occasionally crossing the bridges for view from the other side, then down to the Opera House, then back up via the west bank.

And I enjoyed all of them! Too bad, I wasn't able to absorb the city since I was short in time, but was grateful to have seen it regardless!

After many years, a surprise trip back to Zurich was a fabulous treat.
Stayed at Hotel Alexander, perfect little hotel, in the heart of the Old Town, everything at your fingertips. Station. Shops. Restaurants.

Beautiful area with many restaurants and stores! The outdoor seating was available at many locations with everything from caviar to pizza.
The shopping was excellent as well. Many fine stores were available ( though most closed at 7 pm). It was a great place to see!
