Since there is no ocean or formal beach area to go to in Zurich, the Limmat River serves that purpose. We were at the Marriott and the bridge just across from it was a fun and popular spot for jumping into the river. The nearby restaurant added to the scene. But it was very popular on weekends. As you move up the river you will encounter other areas similar and see many jumping off points. The Limmat is crystal clear and very clean which is why it is so popular.

Amazing experience, jump from the bridge and swim in the river!
Note: water is deep; get the floating fish bag before you get here if you can't swim!

once upon a time, this was simply a place on the river where you could come for a swim. in the meantime, it developped with bars and infrastructure, and you will hear a lot of Germans here. it therefore got the nickname German beach.

Just love going there to hang out and get some rays. Very mixed crowd. Gets packed on a sunny weekend. Great to jump into the river and let yourself drift.

The river Limmat has a speed of about 2 knots and at Flussbad Oberer Letten you can just jump in the river, float along with it and get up further down the shore. It is free of charge and right down town Zürich. Definately worth a try! There is a small café/restaurant if you get hungry or thirsty. Some people bring floating devices, but an average swimmer does not need it.

What a great experience, our hotel did not have a pool, it was a hot summer day and we needed something refreshing, this is something that we have always wanted to try in the past, this time we did and it was awesome. This activity is very popular among locals in Switzerland.

Tips: Swimming in the river is very safe, if you feel insecure doing it, bring a life jacket, since there are chains and ladders all along the channel, but I would recommend being at least 2 people, The current is not very strong but strong enough for not being able to do Treading water swimming and catch the same ladder, let yourself be carried by the current and catch the next ladder to get out, this why it's nice to be accompanied by a 2nd person they can wait for you at the 2nd ladder with your towel and sandals. If we would have been a little younger, we would have jumped from the bridge like the kids do.

Along the channel there is some bar and restaurant which is nice to take a pause.

This something I would recommend for everyone to try at least once in their life, it is pretty exciting and fun that you will want to do it twice. It also makes a good souvenir when watching documentaries about Switzerland. So go for it and HAVE FUN.

If you'd like to cool down on hot summer days in Zurich this is a great option. It is for free, you can just walk up, jump in and let the river take care of the rest.
Howerver, it does get too crowded. If you don't mind that it is definitely a nice place to go to and a great alternative to the lake of Zurich (which is crowded too anyway)

You will not be the only one! safe areas where you can easily jump in, float down and yet have safe exit possibilities on the right side. It's fun and in summer, not uncommon to enjoy 23-25 deg water for cooling down. It's cool!
