About
Reconstruction of a 17th century trading ship called Batavia, which sank in 1628 on its first voyage. At the Bataviawerf the ship is reconstructed in authentic ways. On the shipyard there are several handcrafts still active and can be visited. A visit to the Bataviawerf is a nice daytrip for the whole family.

A place visited by accident when in the nearby shopping village
This is live working museum where you can see the restoration process of old ships and wreckages in all different steps. This is actually a shipyard for all wooden made ships and here you can learn a lot of the heritage of Dutch People

Stop at Batavia was just another one in the list. Never thought it'll be something so exiting. It was so impressive how the ship is perfectly reconstructed. I was just wondering from level to level in this 17th century ship and trying to catch a glimpse of the life on board.
From the captain's cabin to the cargo hall, it was just amazing. The spice and soldiers deck was unbelievably short, I had to crawl through. I wonder how those people traveled in that level.
All in all, a very nice experience. I'm glad I took it up.

I visited Batavialand in July 2019. I had already visited the wreck of the Batavia in Western Australia a few years ago and have read much about this amazing story. Check out "The wicked and the fair", see what Google finds for you!
I sailed from the west coast of Scotland round and down to Norfolk, then across to the Netherlands, into the north sea canal and to the Ijsselmere. from there to Lelystad. New lands in the Netherlands, who celebrate the fantastic history of the Dutch East India Company with a replica of the flag ship lost off the West Coast of Australia in 1628. It's a fantastic story and with a little imagination, it explains the blue eyed Aboriginals who live near the Murchison River! Two Dutch cabin boys were cast ashore there in 1629. DNA will show the truth in future research.

Capturing the spirit of the 17th century at the Bataviawerf in Lelystad in Holland is the majestic Batavia one of the largest ships in its time and the flagship of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
The authentic restoration of the East Indiaman Batavia has been painstakingly carried out and a couple of hours is worthwhile spent touring the ship’s decks and beneath and the surrounding workshops showing blacksmith skills and smithy fires, woodcarvers studio , rope making, sailmaking etc.
It is a great place for a day’s family outing and everyone,in any shape or size goes away rewarded.

This is just impressive. The building of those ships, to try to imagine how those days were. Lot's to do for the kids and the museum and the docks are equally worth your time

Combination of a museum in combination with different activities. Interesting to have an idea how life was back in time.

A great history experience for young and old. To rebuilt a ship like that and to imagine how it must have been travelling on this ship for 3 month or longer. What a horrific thought.

The location indicated on TripAdvisor is wrong (the address is correct). I made the correction today hopefully it will be updated soon. The actual location is just next to the outlet (use outlet parking).
The TripAdvisor location was showing a location about 2 km away.
If you plan to visit with children buy the family ticket (2 adults + 2 children). Ticket prices shown in attached pic.
We started the visit with 15 minutes English video explaining the history. Then we were supposed to go on a guided tour but the guide told us that it will be in Dutch because 3 people in the group spoke Dutch (against 6 of us English speaking!). So we decided not to go for the guided tour.
It was informative to see how ship parts and ropes are made. There is also a blacksmith were the children can help but the smoke smell was too much for my youngest daughter.
We were excited to board the ship and enjoyed walking around and taking pictures.
The ticket included a visit to the next food museum, we didn’t have much time but the kids enjoyed playing with the water experiments at the museum

Been here for the time since they build the replica of the VOC ship the Batavia, I also saw it again in Sydney Australia at the millennium as well as I saw it in Jakarta when it was on its way down under. Yesterday I saw it once again while I was walking with the dog in Lelystad. Just beautiful.

volgens mij doen ze daar wel aan mee, maar het handigste is om ze even een mailtje te sturen of te bellen.

I have 4 questions about Batavia Yard (Bataviawelf):
1) Is there a separate museum that explains Holland's 17th century seaborne empire that Batavia served ?
2) Or, is the museum on board Batavia ?
3) Can we hire private guide to give us Batavia tour and answer questions on Holland's seaborne empire ?
4) Is there a museum (anywhere in Holland) on Holland's seaborne empire ? *We are interested in Dutch colony in Nagasaki (17th century). THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!

1) Is there a separate museum that explains Holland's 17th century seaborne empire that Batavia served - the Bratavialand Museum does a great job of explaining the history and transition of the Netherlands from prehistoric thru the concept of the dams (Afsluidijk). and howbthe people and land adapted. Reviews 7000 years of history. There is a movie which they can run in various languages
Or, is the museum on board Batavia - the museum is separate from the Batavia and it is a short walk away.
Can we hire private guide to give us Batavia tour - the staff at the Shipyard are extremely helpful. We toured the museum first. The staff from the museum arranged a private tour in English. Our guide was extremely knowledge about the ship and the resources needed to build her. We tour the workshops and then the ship. Combined it took about 3.5-4 hours. I do not remember hearing about the Dutch exploration.
Is there a museum (anywhere in Holland) on Holland's seaborne empire ? *We are interested in Dutch colony in Nagasaki - I am unfamiliar of one but email the Batavialand Museum and ask them
I hope this had helped some

Dus buitenlanders welkom !
