The Fries Museum is dedicated to Friesland and the Frisian people. Its activities revolve around the eleven cities that make up the province and the surrounding countryside. These include the Frisians' love-hate relationship with water, the search for what defines the typical Frisian character, and Friesland's place in the wider world. The freedom fighter Grutte Pier's sword; old costumes and clothing; treasures from the Frisian mounds; the legacy of Mata Hari, the exotic dancer who was executed as a spy at the end of the First World War; Gerrit Benner's paintings; contemporary visual art; and the film de Overval: together these objects tell the story of Friesland.

Went on a saturday. Nice and interesting museum, a few different exhibits. We were mostly interested in the WW2 part, which unfortunately was in Dutch only... Anyway, worth a visit. Took us around an hour.

We visited Dokkum because we were in Friesland and the town is twinned with the town we live in (Crediton in Devon). It looked awful as we approached it - industrial units and trading estates and modern nastiness. But once we got into the town...More

The museum itself is modern with interesting exhibitions. But all the information is in Dutch, so did not really get a lot out of it.

Recommend it even if you are with children. Museum is quite big, so take your time. Personally I would have expected a bit more history than art.

The museum is really state-of-the-art, it looks great. For such a huge buildings, it doesn't take that long to see all the exhibitions, but they are pretty interesting. The exhibition about Mata Hari was disappointing, as it was rather small. However, the exhibition related to...More

We really enjoyed the fantastic exhibition on Tadema and the trip to Leeuwarden was worth it. However the other objects in the museum are mostly injteresting for local people and will have a hard time attracting international visitors. Maybe with the exception of those with...More

Great new building, lots of public place, but oh so small when having a great exhibition. Information around objets in display often to meagre. Recentje exhibition of Alma-Tadema; littje attention to development of style, connections to the art climate in general etc.
