Overview
More
The Fries Museum is dedicated to Friesland and the Frisian people. Its activities revolve around the eleven cities that make up the province and the surrounding countryside. These include the Frisians' love-hate relationship with water, the search for what defines the typical Frisian character, and Friesland's place in the wider world. The freedom fighter Grutte Pier's sword; old costumes and clothing; treasures from the Frisian mounds; the legacy of Mata Hari, the exotic dancer who was executed as a spy at the end of the First World War; Gerrit Benner's paintings; contemporary visual art; and the film de Overval: together these objects tell the story of Friesland.

Currently they are having an exhibition about Mata Hari, the most famous female spy in the 20c. It seems she's from this small pretty town.

An interesting exhibit about one of Frieslands more famous citizens, the notorious entertainer Mata Hari that charmed the elite class of Europe at the start of the 20th century. Despite her fame, she comes to unfortunate end in front of a French firing squad, having...More

We went to see the temporary Mata Hari exhibition which is incredible and visited other exhibitions whilst we were there. It's a terrific place with diverse exhibitions and really cool artifacts. The show on Resistance is really powerful. My fiance enjoyed learning about the history...More

We were initially disappointed to hear after entering that two of the halls were closed as they were building new exhibits - as its 2018 City of Culture this shouldn't happen. The Mata Hari exhibition however removed any negative feelings we had! You have to...More

I liked the Museum and the Mata Hari exhibition. It’s a good getaway when it’s cold and windy outside and you can learn about frisian culture. Just the price was a little bit too high with 9,50€ including student discount.

Being in Leeuwarden we experienced bad Dutch weather, cold windy and rain. So we needed a dry place. After a short walk we ended up at the Fries Museum. They had 3 exhibitions, one on Mata Hari, and you should pay a visit to that...More

I went to a exhibition about Mata Hari. If you can, go see it. It's a remarkable story about a Dutch (Friesian) woman who... sorry, that would be a spoiler (if you don't know the story already). But even if you know the story, still...More

Leeuwarden is a nice city. Only the square where this museum is located is very disappointing. I did not like the building and its surroundings. The exposition Mata Hari I rate "average"

Very surprising was this architectual interesting Museum in the middle of the Centre of Leeuwarden. I saw a very interesting Exhibition of a Fresian painter who moved to London and became very famous there.
