Overview
More
The Fries Museum is dedicated to Friesland and the Frisian people. Its activities revolve around the eleven cities that make up the province and the surrounding countryside. These include the Frisians' love-hate relationship with water, the search for what defines the typical Frisian character, and Friesland's place in the wider world. The freedom fighter Grutte Pier's sword; old costumes and clothing; treasures from the Frisian mounds; the legacy of Mata Hari, the exotic dancer who was executed as a spy at the end of the First World War; Gerrit Benner's paintings; contemporary visual art; and the film de Overval: together these objects tell the story of Friesland.

I think this museum is better for someone who lives in Friesland than for a tourist. I wish I'd gone to the Frisian archive or the history museum instead. The modern history part was interesting, but I ended up without getting enough background about Frisian...More

A huge concrete building along side the pretty old Dutch Houses. The local planning office should be ashamed of themself. Smallish, not much interesting on display. Most interesting piece is old dutch room inside the museum.

Lovely building. Got in free as a student and was given a guided tour of the exhibits, of which there is a vast range in different rooms with a different feel to each. Worth visiting in Leeuwarden, and not far at all from the train...More

Realy enjoyed the Mata Hari exhibition. It was very informative with a good number of original documents and photographs and left us with an insight of her life and her tragic death.

Do not expect the top art pieces found elsewhere in The Netherlands, but this very welcoming Frisian museum provides a very nice insight into the history and culture of the province of Friesland. Situated in Leeuwarden, which is worth a one or two day stop...More
