The street has a lot of small shops and places to visit. There are a few cheese shops where you can buy and taste some of the local cheese. Its good to shop around and get a feel of the prices before you buy anything.

Coming from London, I avoid Oxford street as it's crazy busy, but this is what here has become. The shops are pretty good, in fact most are decent and high street chains and the local Dutch clothes and food or brand shops are very good, but the streets are overwhelming with streams of people. So many! It's both locals and... More

It had been a few years since I had been in Amsterdam. Used to enjoy walking through the city centre, admiring the buildings and soaking up the atmosphere. Today we went with our children for the first time and a lot has changed. More touristy than ever before. Even on a cold rainy day in January you can barely walk.... More

Kalverstraat & Eggerstraat are the main shopping streets in the Centrum. Kalverstraat runs north to Dam Square. Eggertstraat runs from Dam Square north towards Centraal Station. No cars are allowed on either street, foot traffic only. It's a very busy thoroughfare in the center of the city. It's lined with shops of all kinds, department stores, bakeries and restaurants. The... More

Good variety of shops including large chains and some smaller boutiques. Easy to pass an hour or two browsing with no pressure to buy. Great atmosphere in December with the pretty Christmas lights

From Flower Market to Dam Square Pedestrian Street Shopping. A mix of Dutch cheese shops, Sketchers, middle range clothing stores, etc. Pleasant half mile walk with the Christmas decorations just put up this last week of October. A nice way to enter Dam Square.

Kalverstraat is a busy shopping streets in central Amsterdam. Named after the calves market held here until the 17th century, todays Kalverstraat is lined with retail shops representing a fair mix of product range and international brand names. Kalverstraat starts at Dam Square, passing south through Spui and ending at Muntplein. There are probably a 150+ shops from start to... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
