Rolf was my guide through the Van Gogh Museum and it was an amazing experience! His love of art enhanced the tour to the point where it was more of a discussion of Vincent's highs and lows and how they were reflected in the paintings, rather than a repetition of biographical facts. He took the time to show me paintings... More

The Van Gogh museum is a great place to learn the history about the peasant-painter! I strongly advice that one buys tickets online a few days before or get tickets from your hotel, because the queues can be very long. They are also very strict about taking photos there.

I loved the Van Gogh Museum! We paid €17 each for entry, although that could have been €14 each if we had remembered to use our vouchers from our hotel! I had limited knowledge of Van Gogh before visiting, but now I know much, much more! The gallery is set out well, documenting Van Gogh's work throughout his life; including... More

This was such a cool experience for me and my friends. Seeing all those self portraits painted all different ways was absolutely brilliant. Highly recommended while visiting.

It was not the most entertaining museum I've ever been in. As an art student; seeing Van Gogh's work was interesting but most of the paintings in the museum were done by other artists. However, the café was fantastic and the gift shop was nice. I probably wouldn't visit again but I'm glad I did go.

The Van Gogh museum was a great place to learn more about Vincent Van Gogh. There were his personal letters to his brother on display and some very unique pieces not seen anywhere else. His paintings of Arles and it's cafés are in the museum in Arles, France not here. They do have a great gift shop though. Make reservations... More

Buy ticket before your visit as the wait to get in can be long and make sure you are there on time as they would only allow a half an hour window after your reserved time. They also won't let you go in earlier. Our visit started at 9 am and by 11 am, the museum was so crowded on... More

Staying in Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)

Neighbourhood Profile
Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.
