This area in the oldest part of Amsterdam is known for the red neon windows that display barely-dressed prostitutes advertising their services; it's all perfectly acceptable as long as it stays inside this designated area of the city.

We walked through this area to get to a laundromat then walked around after. I felt surprisingly safe despite it being a very busy night with several big party groups walking around. Nothing we saw was tasteless.

Very interesting area. A must do when in Amsterdam , preferably during the day when there's a crowd around , not sure how safe it would be at night . Good shops and a good laugh if you see the funny side to it . It's different .... lol

What's not to like -- sex shops and half-naked women trying to solicit business through store-front windows. I hear it's best to go at night, but this is one of Amsterdam's attractions you can pass up.

A must visit, just to broaden your horizons! ;) On a serious note, the place is great, full of life. Amazing eateries and shops all over. An ideal afternoon: sit by the canal, have a beer, go eat a pizza and.. waffles and.. ice-cream and.. fries with cheese and.. god knows what all! So much to see, all day and... More

Been a few times now to Amsterdam and always have to visit the red light district. I'm not sure what it is exactly but we find it so fascinating. Always have great fun and usually there's someone naughty lurking around and the police just pounce from every angle. Very well protected.

Interesting part of the old city as this is where the seafaring city started. Interesting heritage sites and religious history abounds. The prostitution is a fact of life and legal. This unique area is a must see.

I was told I really should look at it. But honestly, I found it sleazy and tasteless. We walked through in the early evening while it was still quite bright. I didn't enjoy seeing attractive young women and girls selling their bodies. It is no worse than seeing women in Dublin doing the same thing or in France doing it... More

Well, you just have to visit the Red Light District while you are in Amsterdam. It's interesting to observe the world's oldest occupation in action... and not just observing the workers, but also the people who walk on the street side, from those who are downright giggling to those who are pretending to be cool about it, to those who... We went in the daytime and were forewarned about pickpockets, but had a delightful time. Many things I have never seen before and would probably never bring a child to see. Lots of people watching, hazy clouds of smoke around coffee shops and funny signs about the offerings. Close to Chinatown also. Wish we could have seen it at night,... More

Not sure I'd want to go at night, not that the locals are scary, but these areas attract a lot of unsavory folks, mostly because there is also the higher concentration of Pot Cafes here.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
