Our group walked thru the courtyard surrounded by the old living quarters. The flowers appeared to have bloomed the previous week. The one building open is full of religious books for sale (I was expecting it to be what a living quarter was like).

Nice, beautiful outdoors activity. Interesting historical site. Not too crowded. Not a place for men ;)

They lived in semi-monastic communities called Beguinages and did not marry while a member (however, unlike nuns, they were free to return to the outside world at any time). This Beguinage is a collection of dwellings (currently 105) and a clandestine Catholic church, facing into a... More

This is a great little detour on an Amsterdam walk - 5-10 minute walk through, very quiet and calm, tourists do not have access to the entire courtyard - it's limited to the residents - so it is very quiet, calm, and authentic.

The Begijnhof is the place to go when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. Beautiful architecture, and VERY IMPORTANT, even if most don't know it! I always visit when in Amsterdam.

A lovely calming square hidden away. Both chapels were very quiet and peaceful, despite their being lots of people there.

If you're walking the city then you're probably going to pass this anyway so take a look. It's nice, quiet with interesting history. The entrance isn't obvious so you'll need to mark it on your map.

A must see when in Amsterdam! Amazing how it turns so quiet instantly when walking throught the doors to the courtyard. I love to come here and relax a bit.

Staying in Centrum

Neighbourhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
