The open market was considered as part of China Town with many restaurants, shops and cafes around. Open markets opened daily and particularly during weekends. A nice place to stroll around to experience what the Asians did during normal hours.

Nieumarkt is the square bordering the eastern side of De Wallen. It's surrounded by restaurants and the De Waag is located there. Despite its name it's one of the older parts of the city. It's beautiful and picturesque. On New Years eve it's a war...More

We really enjoyed this area full of Parisian style street cafes, markets and a lovely square. Easy to walk to and included on our walking tour, it's a great spot for people watching. You can also sample two of the local delicacies from the market...More

Open Market on the weekends is a good place for bargain hunters and folks interested in buying produce (on Saturday). Otherwise, not much to see here -- lots of cafes, brown bars, restaurants. Good place to hang out if you just want to watch people...More

We had a 2nd floor apartment above the square. It is festive and quite loud if your room is right above it. There was a large market in the square on the Sunday of our arrival. It's a good place to people watch from one...More

lot of souvenirs from China, East, but not that much stuff related to Amsterdam. I would suggest to visit any other street market a bit away from city center

We discovered Nieumarket on a Sandeman New Amsterdam walking tour! Such a great discovery. I would recommend going to visit on a Saturday where all local produce is available. Apparently Sunday is more of a touristy market. You have to go purely to try the...More

Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the
Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its
saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to
view some of the city’s most picturesque canals,
historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples
of traditional local architecture – not to mention
Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist
