A worthwhile, revealing museum on the illnesses of the mind

My grandson of 12 and myself spent two hours following the very interesting revelations of the development and understanding of psychiatric illnesses in all its forms. The... read more

This cafe next to the Museum Dolhuys is a good place to have a coffee even if you did not visit the museum. Nice atmosphere, firendly staff. Unfortunately they close at 17:00.

My grandson of 12 and myself spent two hours following the very interesting revelations of the development and understanding of psychiatric illnesses in all its forms. The diversity of approach in showing and understanding the intricacies and illnesses of the mind varies from audio to visual arts and all in between. An extra bonus is the very pleasant cafe with... Very interesting museum and a well worth visit when visiting Haarlem. The museum gives a clear insight in the sane and insanity of menkind.

"Museum of the mind", what can go wrong with it and how it's been dealt with over the years. What is (ab)normal? Different rooms with very different exhibits - very well presented - with moving scenes and spoken explanations, some to be heard via a stethoscope (in the Zorgzaal). Only drawback is that it's only in Dutch. Even so, very... More

The Dolhuys Museum (Dutch for madhouse) is situated in a former lepers and pest house, which later became a psychiatric facility. It’s a thought-provoking place exploring the frontier between sanity and madness. Unfortunately visiting Dolhuys may be less rewarding for visitors who don’t speak Dutch because only a fraction of the information is available in English. We spent hours exploring... More

We happen to reside nearby but never took the opportunity to go. We just needed a relaxed quick bite and we found exactly that! Nicely renovated interior (including an interesting museum) with a nice external seating area overlooking the park and the canal. But even if inside the big glasses front allows for a nice seating in common tables nicely... More

Yes, there's only a brief guide in English available on loan from the shop, which runs out of steam somewhat towards the end. But to be honest the effect of this place is in the mind rather than in the brain...it's emotion rather than knowledge which brings it to life. Some exhibits are surprisingly disturbing and it's interesting to think... More

This museum is a mere exercise in voyeurism on the suffering of people. At times the visit gets almost creepy

A museum oriented at the psyche of human kind. The Dolhuys is characterized by a nice mixture of scientific insights, art, personal experience and hands on activities, exhibited in a very nice way. The topic is at first sight not the first thing you would go for on your day off, but the contents and approach make it worthwhile!

I think it's quite expensive for what it is. There's only one room (the nurse room) that offered some interesting information about the history of the facility and psychiatry in general. The rest of the rooms don't really add value. You also have to pay extra for the temporary exhibition about the self, identify and public opinion... and that's not... More
