About
Het Museum van de Twintigste Eeuw in Hoorn vertelt aan de hand van honderden voorwerpen en tientallen interieurs het leven in de vorige eeuw. Hoe woonden onze (groot)ouders?

Loved it !! All the oh's and ah's when recognising things from years gone by......"my gran used that, I had one if those as a teenager, my dad drove one of them" Such fun.
When in (the area of) Hoorn you should really go and see it 😊

Excellent and fun

A great place well worth the 9 euro entry. Make sure you get the language specific audio guide as all explanation signs are in Dutch. Well laid out with an informative guide. Allow about an hour and a half for adults.

A wonderful history lesson
Jul 2017 • Friends
As a millennium kid I went here with my girlfriend, aunt and uncle. For them it was like they were entering houses out of their past. The told us so passionate about it, everything came alive. I recognised a lot items that were at my grandparents home. It is like walking through history. Amazing to see how enormously things have changed in a few decades. Worth every penny!

Fascinating room settings take you through the decades of the 20thC. So many, many objects and pictures revealing social history, technological development and the history of design.

As part of a city trip the museum is ok
Aug 2017 • Couples
In the densely populated country of The Netherlands, most attention goes out to the four biggest cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague).

However, The Netherlands also offer an enourmous range of small-to-middle sized cities with a historical city centre. Each of these places are good opportunities for a day trip. Usually it comes down to a city centre with old buildings, churches, canals and other stuff (shops, eateries...).
Hoorn is such a place. The city centre is on the bigger end of the spectrum. From the harbour you can see the IJsselmeer, a former sea that was turned into a lake by the Dutch water masters.

Hoorn also houses the museum of the 20th century. It is located at the harbour. You can see alot of items from the 20th century: from toys to typewriters. I was
greeted warmly at the entrance and was offered a free coffee (🕺🏿).
I went to the museum for the temporarily Star Wars exposition. Not very big, quite some nostalgia items were present. The main characters of the saga had a life sized statue with a description, but not Darth Vader? NOOOOOOOOO....

In conclusion, it is worth to spend a day in Hoorn. In doing so, don't forget to reserve an hour for the museum of the 20th century.
The Star Wars exhibition is for the most part interesting for 12 year olds who have just taken there first steps in a galaxy far, far away. To be honest, that's probably also the target audience for Star Wars today.

Very childfriendly museum
Jul 2017 • Family
I travel with my family, which includes two children (age 8 and 10). This museum was over our expectations. They had a Star Wars exhibition (also the permanent exhibition is very nice) and it is one of the best and most child friendly exhibitions I have ever visited. Our kids (and we adults too) loved it! What made it so good was that the children did not just have to look at things, but could try different Star Wars costumes, play with toys and participate in the exhibition. Absolutely worth a visit. If you want to see the Star Wars exhibition you need to hurry, because it ends in October. However, if they put as much thought into the next exhibition as they did in the Star Wars exhibition I am sure it will also be worth to experience.

As already mentioned the permanent exhibition was also very nice. The children loved the part with old toys and we adult liked the part with rooms from different time periods.

The museum has a quite ok museum shop and a cafeteria. The toilets are clean. And… very importantly... the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Nice to see how my grandparents and parents lived :)
Jul 2017 • Friends
I liked the museum, but it was a short trip...that for €9,- is too much. One free coffe/tea or lemonade per person. They sell muffins and a cheese or sausage puffy paste roll and ice cream.....a typical thing is sering dutch people bringing their own lunch (???), but if you don't sell something like a sandwich that's what you get. I think alot is done by volenteers. There was an expo if star wars which was also very small. For me i would have been worth €5,- without the coffe/tea/lemonade. Get a good coffeemachine and sell nice coffees. I found it mire visiting an expo then a museum.

Excellent artifacts
May 2017 • Business
This museum is in a wonderful location in the Barbour at Hoorn. The collection of artifacts is huge and very poignant as it relates so well to the childhood I remember.
I wish the information was also in English. I read Dutch and found it very interesting but know other non Dutch speakers would struggle.
The staff are wonderful. They are warm and friendly. It has a nice cafe too.

trip down memory lane
Mar 2017 • Couples
For most adults this will be a trip down memory lane. You might see things your parents had (and you inherited). Very nice. The star wars temporary exhibit was 'so so'.

Nice and up to date
Feb 2017 • Family
Very nice museum, up to date, also nice for kids. Parking is a bit of a problem when it is raining. But that is quickly forgotten inside the museum.
