Last weekend we went canoeing in Weerribben with a group of friends. It was an enjoyable trip through cute areas. It wasn't a very wild terrain - at least by the standard of foreigners who are used to grandeur of the Mother Nature. However, for what the Nethrlands can offer, the park was very nice. Renting a canoe or a... More

De Weerribben National Park originates from the peat industry in the 19th century. The peat was dug up, creating narrow canals and was laid to dry on the side of those canals. (The "ribben"). When all peat was exhausted, artificial waterways and landscape were left, which evolved in the current "De Weerribben" When you arrive at the main entrance, ample... More

When you're touring The Netherlands and want to have a feel of how most of the countryside would have looked some 2,000 years ago, I recommend to get off the beaten track (i.e., canals, windmills, wooden shoes, ...) and visit this National Park. A day would surely be enough to see the key points, but nowadays this region features many... More

Yesterday we visited this NP for the first time. It consists of two parts: the Weerribben in the North & the Wieden. The southern part called the Wieden is managed by the Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment (Natuurmonumenten) and this is the part we visited. I recommend taking at least 2 days to explore the surrounding villages, the weerribben... More

Very stunning nature, not spoiled by tourists. You can sail for hours in the early morning without seeing any other boats. In the weekend Giethoorn may be a bit more busy but overall very unspoiled beautiful bit of Holland.
